DISTRICT NUMBER 8

was called Tanners Corners School. Some of the early settlers were Charles Tuttle and his wife, Samantha, who came early and cleared this land. He was the youngest of thirteen children. He used to carry a bag of corn from his farm to a little mill at the falls near Tanners Corners to have it ground for use as food. The little falls are still there. They had two daughters, Abbie and Anna. Bradley Green, also an early settler, had two daughters, Elsie and Edna.

The Henry Burtch family also lived here and included Dora, Mabel, and Bertha and five sons: Garfield, who is a dentist in California, Webster, Addison, Albert, and Harold. There was a Ray Deavey family and also a Tanner family. Della Tanner married Allen Beckwith and their family farm is now [c1980s] owned by Ellis Stanton, Doris, his wife, and their son, Ivan.

The Getman family was not too far from the corners and near the schoolhouse that is just by the corners on the road to Omar. Joseph and Dora Bretsch had several children: Fern, Doris, Stanley, Frank, and Carl, who also lived in the district. Also there were Elmer and Kate Hartman Snell and their two children: Gertrude and Ralph; the Peter Bretsch family, Cora, Green, Florida, Claude, Leta and Earl; the Caswells, Horach and Sarah and their three sons, Edward, Harry, and Floyd.

Stella and Purce Hotis lived near the schoolhouse and had four daughters: Muriel, Nina, Vera, and Cora.

Not far away was John and his wife, Carrie Hotis and their children, Lena, Lillie, and John. Merrick Hall and his wife, Minnie, and son Glenn also lived in the area -- was well as Allen Hinman and wife, Hattie and their children: Hazel, Mabel, Elmer, and Lottie.

The Zion Fichette family was very large, but I have only a few of the children's names: James, Persis, Richard, Josephine, Pearl, and Ernest. There was a Marie Godson in the school. The William Fulkerson family, Ida, Mildred, Violet, Roy, and Howard. Charles and Elsie Vroman went to school there also. In addition there was Fred, Shirley, Pauline, Carl, Paul, and Mary.

Frank Dollinger and his wife, Ida, had a cheese factory near the corners and the little falls. Their children were: Gertrude, Lewis, Carl, Aaphael, Rachel and Frank. I was able to get several of the older teachers' names who taught: Ethel Shimmel, Etta Julia [Julia is a surname here], Rachel Dollinger, Mida Vincent, Emmett Shell, Pearl Wagner, Gertrude Snell, Lottie Smith, Fannie Zimmer, Ellen Coon, Viola Courtney, Harry Bowers, Pearl Corp, May Schneider, and Lucina Hagan.

I believe this district must have sent out many well established children with a stable foundation of education to take up whatever they desired to do in this world.
