SCHOOLS IN THE TOWN OF ALEXANDRIA

DISTRICT NUMBER 2

was called the Bailey District. It was located on the Bailey Settlement Road just east of Alexandria Bay off Route 26. Erastus Bailey was one of the early residents there, and that explains the name.

Like all district or country schools, the local authorities had strong control over hiring and firing teachers, over expenditures, collecting taxes, and parents felt free to visit the school on any occasion. The rural schools put on exercises to show the parents what their children could do in school.
