TOWN OF ALEXANDRIA

ICING ON THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER

Ed Sweet Sr. and Ed Sweet Jr. of Alexandria Bay harvested ice at Morgan Island many years ago. They were still using horses. Here, the horse was probably hitched to a rope which ran through a pulley in the ice house to draw the cakes up the steep slide into the house, to be packed in sawdust. Farmers used the same system to draw hay from a load into the hay mow.
