Abeel, Stoffel Janse:  master carpenter; in Beverwyck in 1653; Feb 3, 1655, he was aged about 32 years; his wife was Neeltie Janse Croon; Dec. 4, 1670, made his will in which he mentions the following children:  Magdalena, then aged 17, and already married; Maria, aged 14; Johannes, aged 11, and Elizabeth.

Abeel, Johannes, m. Catalina Schuyler, April 10, 1694; merchant; removed to New York city about 1696, but returned; mayor of Albany, 1694-5 and 1709-10; his gravestone dug up near the 2d Dutch Church, had the following inscription:

"Here lies the body of John Abeel who departed this life ye 28th day of
Jany., 1711, and in the 44 year of his age.

Adriaensen, Van Veere, Maryn, a noted free-booter who came to Beverwyck in 1631 and afterwards figured disreputably in Gov. Kieft's time in New Amsterdam, - O'Callaghan's Hist., N.N.

Adriaensen, Gysbert, Van Bunick, came out to Beverwyck in 1638 in the "Key of Calmar.--O'Callaghan's Hist. N.N.

Adriaensen, Jacob, Van Utrecht, at Beverwyck in 1639 to 1657, perhaps the same as Jac. Adr. Soogemakelyk, alias Van Woggelum.

Adriaensen, Rut or Rutger.  Held a patent for a lot in Beverwyck in 1652, which he sold to Frederick & Henderick Gerritse.

Aertse, Rut (perhaps the same as the last,) in 1674 owned a house next to that of Pieter Clairbout on north side of State street between James street and Broadway.

Aertse, or Aerse, Wouter, Van Nieukerck, sashmaker, a soldier in the W.I. Company's service in Director Kieft's time; in 1678 he bought of Sweer Theunise Van Velsen a lot on the west corner of Broadway and Van Tromp street.

Andriese, Arent (Van Frederickstadt) came to Beverwyck in 1636; perhaps the same as Ar. And. Bratt, which see.

Andriese, Jan, "de Iersman Van Dublingh" alias Jantie (Johnny.)  He settled in Beverwyck before 1645; afterwards at Catskil where he bought land of Pieter Bronck; in 1657 he was complained of by Hans de Vos for selling brandy to the Indians at Catskil.  He died in 1664.  His bouwery contained 69 morgens besides a lot for a homestead.

Appel, Adriaen Janse, from Leyden; 1654 received a patent for a lot at Beverwyck on condition that the house to be erected thereon be not an ordinary tippling house but an inn for travelers; 1656 he sued Marcelis Janse for the loss of an anker of brandy by drawing it with violence through the streets; 1676-86 he was one of the four school-masters of Albany.  He resided for a time at New Amsterdam.  He had two sons, Johannes and Willem, who at different times resided at Schenectady, Albany and New York; at the former place they were both wounded by the French and Indians in their attack upon the village Feb. 9, 1690.

Bakker (Backer), Hendrick De, at Beverwyck in 1642; Vander Donck says he killed at one shot 11 grey geese out of a large flock; 1660 he was fined 12 guilders and costs for bringing in a load of hay on Sunday about the third tolling of the bell.

Bambus, or Bamboes, Harmen Jacobse, in Beverwyck in 1656; he fled from the place in 1657 to escape imprisonment for debt, and his sloop, Eikenboom, and other property were attached at the suit of Rutger Jacobsen.  Having concealed himself at Esopus he was there shot by an Indian in 1658 and his body was carried to New Amsterdam for burial.

Bamnitz, James and Francyntie Cahoen.  Ch:  Jacobus, b. Aug. 23, 1767. "Dese zyn van de Presbyterianen en daarom zonder getuygen."

Bancker (Bancken), Gerrit, was in New Amsterdam before 1655; two years later he was in Beverwyck, where he continued to reside till his death, which took place before the 27th Feb., 1691.  His home lot was on the south side of Yonker (now State) street the third east of Pearl as it then existed.  His wife was Elizabeth Dirkse Van Eps, sister of Jan Van Eps, one of the first settlers of Schenectady.  After the death of her husband Mrs. Bancker removed to New York and engaged in trade.  She died the 3d of July, 1693, aged 70 years, leaving a large property for the time to her son Evert.  Ch: Evert, b. Bancker, Evert, son of Gerrit B., was a merchant in Albany, but retired to his farm in Guilderland during the latter part of his life:  he was buried on the 10th July, 1734:  1692 he was a justice of the peace; 1695-6 and 1707-9 mayor of Albany; he m. Elizabeth Abeel, daughter of Stoffel Janse Abeel, Sept. 24, 1686; she was born March 23, 1671, and was buried March 20, 1734.  His home lot in Albany was on the south side of Yonker (now State) street next east of his father's, and 4th east of Pearl street as it then existed.  He made his will March 13, 1734, proved July 31, 1734, in which he gave to his son Johannes 50 English pounds "provided he continue to live with me till my decease or till I dispose of my farm where I now live."  He mentions the following children who are to share alike in his estate: Christoffel, Willem, Jannetie, Adriaan, Gerardus and Johannes.  Ch: Gerardus, b. Barheit, Andries Hanse, "yeoman of ye Great Flatt near Coxhacky;" had a lot of land next to Pieter Bronck's farm.  Perhaps the same as "Handries Hanse de Sweedt, dwelling in Kinderhoek" in 1675.  His wife was Geertie or Gerritje Teunis, daughter of Teunise Teunise de Metselaer.  She was not living in 1699 when Egbert Teunise (her brother?) became guardian of her four children.  Ch:  Johannes, bp. Bogardus (Bogart), Anneke (Annetie) Janse*. This celebrated character came to Rensselaerwyck, in 1630 with her husband Roeloff Jansen who acted as assistant bouwmeester for the Patroon at a salary of 180 guilders. Five or six years after, the family was found at New Amsterdam where Roeloff received a patent in 1636, for 31 morgens (621 acres) of land lying along the East river between the present Warren and Christopher streets. About this time he d., and in the year 1637 or 1638 his widow married Domine Everhardus Bogardus or Bogart, the first settled minister of New Netherland. Ten years later she again becomes widow and so continued until her death which took place in 1663 at Albany, to which place she had returned after the death of her second husband in 1647. Her property consisted chiefly of the Domine's Bouwery above mentioned, and was divided by her will equally among her three daughters and five sons. By her first husband, whom she married in Holland, she had. First: Sarah Roeloffse who married surgeon Hans Kierstede, June 29, 1642. After his death she married Cornelis Van Borsum of Brooklyn ferry, Sept. 1, 1669; and later Elbert Elbertsen of New York, July 18, 1683. She came from Amsterdam with her parents in 1630, and became a great proficient in the Indian tongue; in 1664 she acted as interpreter in the treaty made by Stuyvesant with the River Indians. She died in 1693. Second: Catrine Roeloffse. She married Lucas Rodenburg vice director of Curacoa, who d. about the y. 1656. Her second husband was Johannes Van Brugh, who was a prominent merchant and magistrate of New Amsterdam, and served in the common council several years after the English accession. They were married March 29, 1658. He d. in New York at an advanced age about 1699. His widow survived him. Their children were, Helena, wife of Teunis DeKay, m. May 26, 1680; Anna, wife of Andries Grevenraet; Pieter; Catharina wife of Hendrick Van Rensselaer of Albany; Johannes; and Maria, wife of Stephen Richard. Third: Sytje. She married Pieter Hartgers Van Wee who came over in 1643, and first settled in Beverwyck as one of the magistrates of the court of Fort Orange in 1654. He d. in Holland in 1670 leaving two daughters in Beverwyck. Fourth: Jan. At the date of his mother's will in 1663 he was unmarried. In 1665, he accidentally killed one Gerrit Verbeck with a gun, for which he was acquitted by the governor in form. Soon after he removed to Schenectady where with his wife he was slain by the French and Indians in the great massacre of 1690, leaving no children. By her second husband, Do. In 1656, he was appointed clerk in the Secretary's office in New Amsterdam, and in 1687 postmaster of the province. Ch: baptized in New York; Everhardus, bp. Nov. 2, 1659; Sytje, bp. March 16, 1661; Anna, bp. Oct. 3, 1663, m. Jacob Brouwer, of Gowanus; Cornelia bp. Aug. 25, 1669; Everhardus bp. Dec. 4, 1675, m. Anna Dally in New York June 3, 1704, had a son Willem bp. there Jan. 7, 1705; Maria, bp. Sept. 14, 1678; Lucretia, bp. Sept. 14, 1678; Blandina, bp. Sept. 13, 1680. About 1686, Willem Bogardus m. his second wife, Walburga DeSille, widow of Frans Cregier, son of Capt. Martinus Cregier.

Bogardus, Cornelis, and Helena Teller, dau. of Willem Teller of Albany. He lived in Albany, where he d. in 1666, leaving one son Cornelis, who m. Rachel DeWit, and d. Oct. 13, 1797.

Bogardus, Pieter, mariner. He resided in Albany till near the close of his life, when he removed to Kingston, where he d. in 1703. In 1673, he was one of the magistrates of the town, and in 1690, was commissioned with others to treat with the Five Nations and to look after the defence of the town. He made his will Feb. 3, 1701/2. His wife was Wyntie Cornelis Bosch, dau. of Cornelis Teunise Bosch and Maritie Thomas Mingael who afterwards m. Jurriaen Janse Groenwout in 1664. Ch: Evert; Shibboleth; Hannah, b. Jan. 22, 1679, m. Pieter Bronck; Maria, m. Johannes Van Vechten of Schaghticoke; Anthony; Rachel, bp. Feb. 13, 1684; Ephraim, bp. Aug. 14, 1687; Petrus, bp. Bogardus, Cornelis; he was schoolmaster in Albany in 1700; soon after with his wife Ragel Tjerckse DeWit he removed to Kingston his wife's native place.* He d. Oct. 13, 1707. Ch: Jenneken, bp. in New York May 13, 1694; Ragel, bp. in Albany April 27, 1701, and was buried there Feb. 13, 1757; Cornelis. *Cornelis et Ragel Bogardus ablerunt mense Augusta 1720 cum testamento Kingstown."
