The Capital District Genealogical Society was founded 1981, 300 + members. Serves Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Schenectady and Schoharie counties. Meets monthly on a saturday at Colonie Town Library as well as taking some field trips. Traveling genealogists welcome at meetings. Free admission to all meetings, except the annual conference in the spring, which is held at a hotel and includes a national speaker and a sit down luncheon. Members are working on transcribing and indexing the 1855 Albany City and County NY State Census records. Towns outside the city are almost completed, but city has not yet been started. However, for research help, there is a city directory that lists the people, occupations and addresses. This might help locate the people in the ward and then in the census until the census is indexed.

Research questions about where to find resources can be sent to the Society's PO Box, noting attention to the Reference Volunteers. A list of researchers is also available. Please enclose a long SASE when writing for these services.

Dues $10.00 annually, includes quarterly newsletter and 2 free queries in newsletter, plus free registration of ten surnames to the surname list (a surname, one b,m or d date and the county in NY where it occurred, then your name and address all on a 3x5 card). The list is updated annually in the fall and has over 3,000 NY surnames on it so far.
