Feisty Women

DINKINS, Margaret Wadlington
Her own stories include a wonderful memoir about "running the Yankee blockade" to get necessary supplies for the family farm during the Civil War, and one about how her parents fell in love and married in 1778.

Descended from French nobility and part of the most prominent family in the colony of New France, Jeanne nonetheless enjoyed a good brawl as much as her sons did.

McNAUGHT, Esther Silverthorn
Esther, a feisty Canadian pioneer woman of the early 20th century, went to court to keep her ranch after her uncle's death - and she won!

RAWSON, Rebecca
Rebecca, daughter of an affluent Massachusetts Bay Colony family, married a man identified as Sir Thomas Hale, the supposed nephew of Lord Chief-Justice Hale of England. Three days after their arrival in England, Rebecca's new husband suddenly abandoned her, taking most of her property. This article by Michael K. Ward, a Rawson descendant, appeared in the New England Journal of History, Fall 1999, Volume 56 No. 1. Contains two 19th-century line art reproductions of the Edward and Rebecca Rawson paintings.
