[13545] Rsearcher of this line- Bill Davidson [email protected] 6/2006 - I found two deeds for EHN. They were written in accordance wi th the Homestead Law of 1870 (a law passed in VA that apparently allowed property owners to designate certain items to be exempt from "distress or lien"...I had never heard of this before). These deeds were both written in 1885, and the second one was simply an update/addition to the fir st one. These were in the Hustings Court records for the City of Richmon d, VA. Elias Henry Nuckols lived "at tenement No. 2214 Main Street" when these deeds were written. Elias H. Nuckols-Homestead Law Deed # 2 Know all men by these presents that I, Elias H. Nuckols a householder a nd head of a family residing in the City of Richmond, State of Virgin ia do in addition to my homestead already recorded in the Clerk's offi ce of the Chancery Court of the City of Richmond in DB 127 a p, 224 and in pursuance of the Constitution of the State of Virginia and the act of the General Assembly passed, in pursuance thereof, known as the Home stead Law, approved 27 June 1870, do hereby claim and set apart the follow ing personal property to be held for the benefit of myself and family free from levy, execution or sale, to wit: 2 Stoves for heating of the value of $4 each $8.00 1 Large extension table " " $15.00 1 Sofa (or Safe ?) " $8.00 1 Set chamber furniture consisting of Bed, Bedstead and Bedding, Bureau (? ), Dressing Case, 4 Cain seat chaise & lounge (value) $40.00 1 other set, chamber furniture consisting of Bed, Bedstead & Bedding Bureau (?) and Dressing Case, 1 Large Lounge (value) $40.00 1 Sewing Mach " $10.00 1 Large Cooking Stove " $25.00 $146.00 all the articles above enumerated are now owned by me, and are now in my p ossession at tenement No. 2214 Main St. Richmond, Vaand I hereby certify that the above is a fair cash evaluation for the above enumerated articles. Witness my hand & seal this 25th Day of November A. D. 1885. E. H. Nuckols Note: On the above date at 3:00 p.m., the Chancery Court accepted the abo ve deed, and teste was provided by Benj. H. Berry, Clerk. On Jan 1 1873 Elias H Nuckols signed an affidavid before the Commission er of Henrico Co, VA, age 39, a carpenter, a testimony for James Duke pension application for the civil war. Copies are in the Society Files and c an be scanned for anyone who wishes a copy.
