[5739] San Francisco Call Sunday, December 12, 1897 Two Men Nearly Cut In Halves A Companion Is Saved by What Appears A Miracle A Switch engine collided with a box car on Long Wharf this morning and two deaths and one serious accident resulted. Hugh Hunter was killed instantly. Albert Adams had both his legs smashed and died at Fabiota Hospital at new, and William S. Nuckolls is at the hospital with a compound fracture of one leg many other injuries which though painful are not dangerous. The three men were standing on the foot board at the front of the switch engine which was backing a box car down the track. A second switch engine closely followed the other one. The first engine stopped abreast of the depot and the men were still standing on the foot board between it and the box car to which it was attached. Owing to the slippery condition of the rails. The second engine could not stop when it approached the first engine, the sled along the tracks and pushed the locomotive on which the man were standing into the box car. They had no time to move either way, but were completely caught the trap and that all three were not instantly kill is more surprising than that one escaped. When is the collision occurred, the men and engines were on the way to work at the lower end of the wharf. The collision was a very slight one, neither of the locomotives being damaged and the box car being that little crushed. The men were almost cut in halves, being completely caged in on all sides and unable to move or make any effort to jump after they saw their danger. Hugh Hunter, who was dead when taken from between the engine and car, was a widower, 66 years of age and had been employed many years in the car repair department. He had charge of the department gain at Long Wharf. He leaves a family of grown up sons and daughters. Albert Adams was only 24 years of age and was also in the car department. When taken out both his legs were badly broken and he was otherwise seriously mangled. In addition his back was broken. He survived only four hours. He was a single man living with his sister in East Oakland W. S. Nuckolls is a switch man, who has been with the company about two years. He is divorced from his wife and has two children. For some time past he has stated that he intended to leave the service of the railroad company before he was killed. The doctors at Fabiola say he will recover,

[5743] Oxnard Courier Oxnard California 09 May 1913 Smashes Car To Save Woman- Frightened By Collision She Jumps Before Auto Guided Over Grade-Both Drivers Hugging Bank Rounding Curve-Machine Is Demolished By Roll To Bottom of Steep Embankment- In and automobile collision Wednesday afternoon near the top of the Conejo grade fatalities were narrowly avoided and one car was run off the side of the grade and demolished. W S Nuckols and wife of Oakland, were going up the grade in a four passenger car. Two men named Brown and Jones , whose residence could not be ascertained, were coming down the grade. Both were hugging close to the hill side and in rounding a turn they collided. Mrs Nuckols , frightened, jumped from their machine into the road directly in front of the two men after the collision. Brown, who was driving, could not control the car after the smash, and to avoid running down Mrs Nuckols started his car over the edge and jumped. Jones had jumped before. The grade is very steep at the point and the car rolled to the bottom and is very much damaged. Walter Bell of Bell's Garage, Camarillo, was summoned and took the cars to his garage and is repairing them.
