In December 1810, the new Governor of NSW, Lachlan Macquarie, issued orders that Chaplains and Assistant Chaplains keep exact Registers of Marriages, Christenings, Churching of Women and Funerals which they performed and to make a correct Return thereof once in every Quarter to the Secretary's Office at Sydney. The said Registers were required to contain the Marriages, Christenings, Churchings and Funerals as of all convicts and prisoners as wel as of free persons.   Marie explains about Churchings. Recently I underwent major surgery in a Sydney hospital. We would all be aware that Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease is a very big problem at the present time. When I became fully conscious after my operation, I found myself in a four-bed ward with two Dementia patients; a third was to arrive at midnight. Records relating to the Old Sydney Burial Ground are scant. No dedicated burial register or plan for the cemetery has survived and possibly never existed. Rookwood Cemetery has been operating since 1867, and is one of the largest cemeteries in Australia. The Anglican and General Cemetery Trusts are responsible for the burial, care and maintenance of 92 hectares of Rookwood, approximately one-third of the cemetery. You have to register to search. The following is a list of captains (or commanders) mentioned in the Australian produced publication "Log of Logs" which was painstakingly compiled by the widely respected (late) Commodore Ian Nicholson (RAN). The three volumes contain a catalogue of Logs, Journals, Shipboard Diaries, Letters and all Forms of Voyage Narratives 1788 - 1993, for Australia, New Zealand and surrounding oceans (and does also include vessels travelling world-wide, so international masters of vessels are recorded as well as whaling vessels, survey vessels, ships of exploration, etc.). Manchester's "Unfilmed" Manchester's "Unfilmed" 1851 Census
Family historians with ancestors in mid-19th century Manchester face a particular difficulty. Following transfer of the enumeration books to the Home Office in London and analysis of the contents, the area where the books were stored was flooded and the books were badly damaged. Some of the books were in such poor condition that it was not considered worth filming them. Others were filmed but much of the image appears blackened and the writing is not decipherable. Since the original books were considered too fragile to permit public access, the returns relating to over 200,000 people were effectively unavailable.
Recovering the Lost Souls
In 1991 Manchester & Lancashire Family History Society secured the agreement of the (then) Public Record Office to access the damaged returns and transcribe such information as might still be legible. This was the start of a 14 year project which concluded in 2005 with the publication of the final transcripts. Despite the damage, details of some 82% of the 217,717 persons whom the statisticians had counted had been recovered. 1851 Census
