THE WESTERNPORT SETTLEMENT OF 1826-28

THE WESTERNPORT SETTLEMENT OF 1826-28

Following are details of all those who can be identified as having spent some time at the Westernport Settlement (now the site of Corinella, Vic) between its establishment on November 24th, 1826 and its abandonment on February 27th, 1828.

Crew members of visiting ships have not been included, as they were not permanent members of the Settlement at any time.

(For full details of the holdings of the NSW Archives Office in relation to this settlement, see the Guide to the State Archives of NSW, Number 14 page 120.)

If you are interested in this subject, please click here to send an email to me. I am interested in adding any further information available regarding those at the settlement. Further information on the Settlement can be found on Jenny Fawcett's Genseek site.

Individuals at the settlement fall into three categories:

  1. Military. Individuals in the ranks have been tracked through the Quarterly Musters in the Mitchell Library, Sydney. Details of Officers are quite vague in these books.
  2. Convicts. Indents of the initial party, and later arrivals are all contained in the Westernport Papers in the NSW Archives Office (4/7032 on microfilm reel 903).
  3. Civilians. For those who can be identified, a variety of sources supplied the information. Unidentified civilians include 2 women who arrived with the original party and left on the "LUCY ANNE" (probably wives of members of the 3rd rgt); and 3 women and 8 children who arrived on the "LUCY ANNE" and left on the "ISABELLA" when the Settlement was abandoned (probably families of members of the 57th rgt).
