THE VIDLER FAMILY IN AUSTRALIA
THE VIDLER FAMILY IN AUSTRALIA
ORIGINS
The five distinct lines of the VIDLER family in Australia all originated
in the South-Eastern areas of England, in particular from the Kent/Sussex
border areas. Although the spelling in this country has been consistently
VIDLER (with one exception)
since the families arrived, research in England has shown that the
spelling was originally VITLER, which I personally believe to have been a
derivative of VICTUALLER.
A One-Name-Study into the FIDLER/FIDDLER/VITLER/VIDLER variants is
currently being undertaken by Graham Fidler, who can be contacted at

THE FIVE AUSTRALIAN LINES
The five lines to be discussed on this page are:
- Descendants of William Vidler and Mary Copper,
who emmigrated (in the main) from Sandhurst, Kent in 1838 and settled in the Illawarra area of NSW
- Descendants of Thomas Vitler and Mary Chapman,
three of whose children settled in the Stroud area of NSW
- Descendants of George Vidler and Elizabeth King,
who settled in the Sydney suburb of Five Dock
- Descendants of John Vidler and Mary Anne Curran,
who settled in the Victorian country town of Euroa
- Descendants of Robert Vitler and Esther Quince,
who settled in the Yass area of NSW
Since 1980, a group of dedicated researchers has been
compiling a list of descendants of William Vidler. As a by-product, we
have recorded details of a few thousand members of the other families.
New information is always welcome, as is contact with other researchers.
