A.F.
Church & Co. Topographical Township Map of Hants County,
1871.
In
1864, Ambrose F. Church was commissioned by the Nova Scotia
legislature to create a series of maps, one for each of Nova
Scotia's 18 counties. A.F. Church’s maps are a great
genealogical tool because each one shows the locations of towns
and villages, basic topographic features and the names of
residents. In many cases, the occupation of many prominent
townsfolk (clergy, blacksmith, merchant) was also included. Mr.
Church completed the series in 1888. The counties and dates were
as follows: Halifax 1865, Pictou 1867, Yarmouth 1870, Digby 1870, Hants 1871,
Kings 1872, Cumberland 1873, Colchester 1874, Annapolis 1876, Guysborough 1876,
Cape Breton 1877, Antigonish 1878, Shelburne 1882, Lunenburg
1883, Inverness, Richmond and Victoria counties 1883-1887, and Queens 1888.
This map of Hants
County was published in 1871 and includes subscriber, and business
directory listings as insets with individuals and their
professions. The map measures a size of
55.5" x 55" in a scale of one mile
to one inch [1 mile = 1 inch]. A copy of the A.F.
Church Map of 1871 is available here by simply clicking on the map to see an enlarged image.
Please note that each scanned section of the map presented overlaps the surrounding sections.
Reproductions from the A.F. Church & Co. map series are
