Description of Halifax School Districts

NOTICE.

THE following Division of Halifax (Proper) into School Districts, pursuant to the Provisions of the Act of the last Session of the General Assembly, entitled, "An Act for aiding and assisting Common Schools throughout the Province," is published by Order of the Board for the information of all Persons interested.

Halifax, 7th May, 1828

ALEXANDER PRIMROSE, Clerk

No. 1. District.

To include the South Suburbs, to Fresh Water Bridge and St. Peter's Ward.

No. 2. District.

To include St. Matthews Ward, and the Province Building Ward.

No. 3. District.

To include the County Court House Ward and the old Pontac Ward.

No. 4. District.

To include the North Barrack Ward and the North Suburbs, from the water to Gottingen Street, and the Inhabitants on the West Side thereof; and to include Inhabitants North Side of North Street.

No. 5. District.

To include the South and Middle Divisions of Five Acre Lots on Peninsula, and from Fresh Water River to the Point Pleasant.

No. 6. District North Peninsula

To include the North Division of Five Acre Lots; to be bounded South by the Grand Parade, and the Exercising Ground, and the Road leading from the North West thereof towards Brehm's; West by the Street which runs west of Willow Park, and then by a line direct to the Bridge at M'Alpine's, and North by the Basin; and on the East by the Narrows and the Harbour to North Street aforesaid.

No. 7. District North West Arm.

To include all the Lands round the Basin, from M'Alpine's Bridge, to the Bridge at Birch Cove, and from the West Side of the North Peninsula District round the head of the Arm to the Four Mile Stone on the Road to Spryfield; to extend on the Arm to below Melville Island on the West Side, and to the middle Division Lots on the East, and to include the Dutch Village Settlements. The West Boundary Line to run from the Four Mile Stone aforesaid, to Birch Cove Bridge, and two miles in the rear of the Road in front of the Village.

No. 8. District Nine Mile River.

To include all the Lands lying on Bedford Basin, from Birch cove Bridge to Sackville Bridge, and the Settlements on the Hammond Plain Road, to the Paper Mill, and the North West Line of Dunn's Grant, including the Inhabitants on each Road.

No. 9. Hammond Plain District.

To extend from the Bounds of Dunn's Grant, by the Paper Mill, along the Road to the South West Side of the Grant to Hays, including all the White Inhabitants on each side of, and within one mile of the Road; and on the Lands granted on the rear of the Windsor Road Lots, to Floyd and Webber, A. Vieth, and Amos Melvin.

No. 10. Negro District.

To comprehend all the Locations to Negro Settlers, on the New Annapolis Road, as far as the Wellington Settlement, from the Forks of the Hammond Plain Road, including all the Negro Settlers.

No. 11. Wellington District.

To include the Lands on the New Annapolis Road; called the Wellington Settlement from the Grant to John Wyat, Junior, to that of Isaac Rigby, both inclusive - extending from each side of the Road to the rear Lines of the Lots.

No. 12. Sackville Church District.

To comprehend the Lots on Windsor Road, on both sides thereof, numbers one to ten both inclusive; but extending on the South West to the Line of the Hammond Plain District, only; and extending Northward from the Truro Road, and the North Line of Colonel Beresford's purchase of the Sackville Estate.

No. 13. Windsor Road District.

To include the Windsor Road Lots from number eleven to number thirty-two, on both sides of the Road, both inclusive.

No. 14. Spryfield District.

To include the Lands from the Four Mile Stone on the Road from Halifax to Spryfield, and to extend along the North West Arm to the North Bound of William Russel's Grant, and to extend along the Road to Margaret's Bay, as far as the Forks of the same with the Prospect Road, and down the Pennant, Bay Road through Harriet Fields, to the Grant to Houseal, and on the Sambro Road to the North Line of the 600(?) acres granted to Christian Warner, and to be bounded by a Line from that Lot, across the Herring Cove Road, to Russel's Line aforesaid; comprehending all the Settlements at Spryfield's and Harriet's Fields and their respective Roads.

No. 15. Herring Cove District.

To extend from North Side of Russel's Grant to North Side of Joseph Bracket's Grant, north of Bear Cove, to be bounded thereby on the South, and on the East by the North West Arm and Harbour, and to extend from thence Westwardly one mile beyond the Road from Spryfield to Herring Cove; comprehending both Herring Cove and Ferguson's Cove.

No. 16. Portuguese Cove District.

To extend from Bracket's north Line, north of Bear Cove, round the shore, and up the East side of Duncan's Cove; and to extend from the Shores West, about one mile.

No. 17. Ketch Harbour District.

To extend from Head of Duncan's Cove; to the West Line of Peter Martin's Grant on Sambro Harbour, and from the Sea Shore to the Land granted to the Heirs of Welner; including Ketch Harbour Settlement, and West Side of Duncan's Cove.

No. 18. Sambro District.

To include all Sambro Harbour from where Peter Martin's West Line strikes its East Shore, to Pennant Bay; and to be bounded South by the Sea Shore, and West by the Road to Pennant Bay; and to extend up the Sambro Road through Harriet Fields, as far as the North side of Christian Warner's Grant. Comprehending Pennant Point.

No. 19. Lower Prospect District.

To extend from Pennant Bay and Road on the East to Meadow Lake and the East Branch of Prospect Harbour, and to be bounded by the Sea Shore on the South, and on the North by a Line from Meadow Lake, to the Head of Terance Bay, and the Road aforesaid.

No. 20. Upper Prospect District.

To comprehend the Settlement called Upper Prospect, and the Islands which are settled, and to include all the Lands between the Shores of Prospect Bay and Prospect Inlet, and to a Line to be drawn from thence across the Road to Meadow Lake aforesaid.

No. 21. Peggy's Cove District.

To comprehend all the Settlements and Inhabitants on the Coast from Shag Bay to the North Line of the Indian Harbour Grant, in Cut in Cove, Margaret's Bay.

No. 22. Margaret's Bay, East District.

To extend from the North Line of the Indian Harbour Grant, up the East side of the Bay, to the South side of the Grant to George Wynaught, and to extend from the Bay Shore three miles, and to include the Islands.

No. 23. Indian Harbour District.

To extend from South Side of the Grant to George Wynaught, round the North East Head of the Bay, to Ingram's River, and to reach three miles from the Shores Inland, including the Islands.

No. 24. Hibbert's Cove District.

To extend from Ingram's River to the Line of the County of Lunenburg, and three miles from the Shore and to include the Islands.

EAST DIVISION

No. 25. District Bedford Basin.

To extend from Sackville Bridge to the Truro Road, and include the Lands and Settlers, from thence to the East side of the Basin to the North Point at the Narrows, above Tuft's Cove.

No. 26. Dartmouth District.

To be bounded Westwardly by the Harbour, from the North Point above Tuft's Cove, to Fort Clarence Grounds, at the Brook there; Southwardly by a strait Line from the Brook to Lake Morris. Eastwardly to Lakes Morris and Russel, by the Stream at the head thereof, to the Bridge, then by the Cole Harbour Road to the Forks of the Preston Road. Thence by a strait line running to the Causeway on the Dartmouth Lake and Northwardly by a line from that Causeway round by the Narrows of the First Lake, and including No 7, to the North Point aforesaid.

No. 27. District South East Passage.

To be bounded North by the Line running from the Brook above Fort Clarence to Morris Lake, Eastwardly by the same Lake; and the Lakes and Streams falling into Cow Bay, and Southwardly and Westwardly by the waters of Cow Bay, the Eastern Passage, and the Harbour, including all the Lands and Settlers from the Passage over to Cow Bay, and its Lakes.

No. 28. District of Cole Harbour.

To be bounded Westwardly from the Forks of the Road from Dartmouth to Cole Harbour, then by the Road to the Bridge, then by the Stream to Russel's Lake, by the same Lake, aad by Lakes Morris and the Cow Bay Lakes and Streams, to Cow Bay, and by the East Side thereof, Southwardly and Eastwardly by the Shores of Cow Bay and Cole Harbour, to Salmon River, and up Salmon River to the North Line of Lawrence Town, and Northwardly by the Division Line to the North West Angle of the Township, and thence by a strait line running to the Forks of the Road, or place of beginning aforesaid.

No. 29. Lawrence Town District.

To include all that part of the Township of Lawrence Town, which lies between Salmon River and the Harbour and Lakes of Lawrence Town; also the First Division Lots from Seven to Eleven, both inclusive on the East Side of that Harbour, and the Second Division Lots Numbers Six and Eight.

No. 30. Lake Loon District.

To extend from the Causeway on the Dartmouth Lake, up the Road to Preston, to the East Bounds of George Simpson, Junior's property, and to be bounded Southwardly by Cole Harbour District, West by Dartmouth District, the Lake, and Lake Charles, North by Lake Loon Run, and Eastwardly by a Line running North from Cole Harbour District, one quarter of a mile from, and parallel with Simpson's Road.

No. 31. Preston District.

To extend from one quarter of a mile beyond Simpson's Road, along the Preston Road to Partridge River, and extending two miles North of the Road, and to the Township Line on the South.

No. 32. Negro District Preston.

To include all the Negroes and their Locations settled along the Road from Preston towards Porter's Lake and for three miles on each side thereof; beginning at the Government Farm Road, on the West side, and extending to the Hill beyond Taylor's on the East.

No. 33. District Porter's Lake Bridge.

To comprehend all that part of the Township of Preston, which lies on the Lake Porter, extending up besides three miles above the Bridge, and three miles West thereof, and to the limits of Preston Township on the East.

No. 34. District Porter's Lake Mills.

To include the Second Division Lots of Lawrence Town, Numbers Nine to Sixteen, both inclusive, including the Lower part of the Lake and Three Fathom Harbour.

No. 35. West District Chizetcook.

To include all that part of the First Division of Lawrence Town, which lies on Chizetcook Harbour.

No. 36. East District Chizetcook.

To extend from the Bounds of Lawrence Town and Preston Townships, and to include all the Settlers and inhabitants at the Chizetcook Lakes, and on the Head and East side of Chizetcook Harbour, as far as the Grants extend from the shore of that Harbour.

No. 37. Musquodoboit Harbour District.

To include all the Settlements and Inhabitants on Port Piswick Harbour, and on both sides of Musquodoboit Harbour and River, up to the Still Water, and extending three miles from the East Side of the Harbour.

No. 38. Jiddore District.

To include all the Settlements and Inhabitants on Jiddore Harbour and round the Bay; and to extend three miles from the Shores of the Harbour in every direction.

No. 39. Ship Harbour District.

To include all the Settlements and Inhabitants at Owl's Head Harbour, Ship Harbour, and Shoal Bay, as far as the original Grants at those Settlements extend from the Shores.

No. 40. Pope's Harbour District.

To include all the Settlements and Inhabitants at Tangier Harbour, Pope's Harbour, and Taylor's Bay, as far as the original Grants at those Settlements extend from the Shore.

No. 41. Sheet Harbour District.

To include all the Settlements and Inhabitants at Sheet Harbour, and on both sides thereof, and to extend as far as the original Grants on that Harbour reach from the Shores.

No. 42. Beaver Harbour District.

To include all the Settlements and Inhabitants at Beaver Harbour, to the East side of Hales Grant, and to extend as far as the several original Grants extend from the Shores on that Harbour.

No. 43. Mary Joseph District.

To extend from the East Line of the Lot granted to Hailes, to the Bounds of the County of Disney, and extending from the Shores of the Harbours, as far as the Grants and Settlements reach.

No. 44. Truro Road District.

To extend from and including Fletcher's Property at Fletcher's Bridge, to the Twenty Four Mile Stone Truro Road, and bounded on the West by Fletcher's and the Great Lake, and to extend East of the Truro Road.

No. 45. M'Keen's District.

To include the Lands and Inhabitants between the South Side of Key's Farm, and the District Line at Gay's River, and from the Shubennacadie River, on the West, to two miles East of the Truro Road.

No. 46. Lake Egmont District.

To extend from Cook's Settlement, on the Road from Moore's at Gay's River to Musquodoboit, three miles on each side of Cook's, and to include the Lands and Settlers in that space, and two miles on both sides [of] the Road.

No. 47. Raine's District.

To include the Lands and Inhabitants on the Musquodoboit River, from the District Line down Stream, to the Upper Line of the late Mr. Laidlaw's Farm, and from the River Side on each Bank three miles.

No. 48. M'Dougall's District.

To include the Lands and Inhabitants on the Musquodoboit River, from the Upper Line of the late Mr. Laidlaw's Farm, down stream, to the upper part of Jenkin's Lot, and from the River on each side three miles.

No. 49. Meagher's Grant District.

To include the Lands and Inhabitants on the Musquodoboit River, from the upper part of Jenkin's Lot, down stream, to the Lower side of James M'Donald's Grant, and from the River on each side three miles.

No. 50. Irish Settlement District.

To include the Lands and Inhabitants on the new road from Dartmouth to Musquodoboit River, from the east side of the Grant to Geddes's, now Dollard's farm, to the west side of Mrs. Marianne Smith; and from the road on each side three miles.

No. 51. Port Wallace District.

To commence at the Causeway on the Dartmouth Lake, and to extend to Fletcher's Bridge, and be bounded west by the Lakes, and extend Eastwardly therefrom three miles.
