Tombstones in Old Sambro Cemetery (St. James United), Sambro, NS

Surveyed in October 1965 by John and Evelyn (Nickerson) Longard

A special thank you to Nancy Hood (daughter of John and Evelyn Longard) for allowing this information to be posted on the HalifaxCountyNSGenWeb Pages!!

A note from Nancy Hood: These headstone surveys were completed by my parents back in 1965. Some of the older stones may have lost their inscriptions by now and I know that some were very near the edge of the ocean and were being washed away even then.

A note from Leslie Harnish: I had the opportunity to walk through the Old Cemetery on March 28, 1999, and as Nancy predicted, many stones are now tipped over, broken and sitting crumbled on the ground and are mostly unreadable. At the time of Mr. & Mrs. Longard's survey, there were 49 stones, today there are approximately 20 - 30 stones remaining. Time and the elements, most notably our salty sea air, have certainly taken its toll on this cemetery. There are many bare spots and sink holes in the cemetery with the possibility of stones being buried under the long grass or on the rocky shore that the cemetery sits on. I am very thankful that Mr. and Mrs. Longard had the insight back in 1965 to survey this cemetery and preserve this information for generations to come.
