HALIFAX
COUNTY
Ingramport
LOCATION:
The rural community of Ingramport is on the
northwest side of the bay area.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
Charles Ingram had been a sergeant with the
Warburton Regiment and was stationed in Halifax in 1749. The
community received its name from Ingram as he was one of the first
settlers who lived near Ingram River that now also bears his name.
In 1905, the name of the community officially became Ingramport.
HISTORY:
One of the more prosperous industries to flourish at
Ingramport was lumbering. In the early 1900s, the Lewis Miller
Lumbering Company was established. Ships arrived from around the
world and the company provided work and affluence to many residents,
including the Swedish settlers brought to Ingramport by the company.
But as the forests were stripped bare the lumbering operations came
to an end and many of the workers moved elsewhere.
GENEALOGY:
Others who arrived included the Crawford and Brown
families in 1763, followed by the Westhavers in 1834.
INGRAMPORT TODAY:
Today Ingramport is largely a rural residential
community with a few homes and some summer cottages.
