HALIFAX
COUNTY
Grand Lake
LOCATION:
The community of Grand Lake borders the lake of the
same name on Route #2.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
Grand Lake, as it is now known, is part of that same
chain of lakes that the Mi'kmaq used an overland waterway. They
called it "Tulugadik," meaning 'camping ground.'
SETTLEMENT HISTORY:
In the early 1800s, the Kenty family of Truro
received a land grant and moved to the Grand Lake area to set up a
sawmill. They were followed by the Kirk family in 1813 and then by
John Bazalgette and a number of others who shared a land grant of
2,265 acres.
GRAND LAKE TODAY:
Close to the community is Laurie Provincial Park, a
60-acre park located on land donated by K.C. Laurie. He was the son
of Colonel John Winburn Laurie who owned the estate situated nearby
in Oakfield. The park was opened in September 1961 with picnic
areas, camping sites, walking trails and a swimming area to be
enjoyed by tourists and residents alike.
