LOCATION:
The village of Beechville is located near the beginning of
the St. Margaret's Bay Road.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
Many of the earliest arrivals were refugees who had escaped
from slavery from the southern American colonies. They played
their part in the War of 1812 and were given a grant of five
thousand acres near the North West Arm in a section that came
to be known as Refugee Hill. The area, which was comprised of
the Chain Lakes to the Nine Mile River and Beech Hill, became
known as Beechville.
SETTLEMENT HISTORY:
After the war of 1812, several land grants were issued to
Black families, including those with the surnames of Allen,
Hamilton, Lovett, Cooper and Roberts, each who received ten
acres.
Lumbering operations were carried out in the vicinity of
Nine Mile River and the various lakes found within the
community.
COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT:
The Baptist Church played an important role in the
development of community and in 1868, a baptism was recorded
in local newspapers in which forty-seven people were baptized
in Lovett Lake while over one thousand stood in attendance.
The event became known as "The Great Baptism," which
was later commemorated in a poem and painting.
BEECHVILLE TODAY:
Today Beechville has blended in with the other communities
along the St. Margaret's Bay Road. However, this small
community is now in the process of expanding as a new
subdivision, along with a new state-of-the-art school under
construction.
