The following is some bit and pieces taken from some old clipping from the Oxford Journal, mostly in 1970's.


Some of the Employees at Oxford Foundry & Machine Co. Ltd on May 27, 1947, are Clifford Dorey (Northport), the late Russell Doncaster, Bill Seaman (now of Auburn, Mass.), Charles MacPherson, Howard Wood, Floyd Fraser and the late Percy Fraser.

Mr. and Mrs. Earle MCCORMACK, Mt. Pleasant, Oxford, celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary, Sunday, August 26th, 1979. They were married at the home of her parents on August 28th, 1929, by Rev. Chas. Leonard Gesner, United Church Minister. Mrs. Verlie McCormack is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Burton Read, Upper Nappan, and Mr. Earle McCormack is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Melville McCormack, Mt. Pleasant. They had five boys and two girls.

Walter RUSHTON was honored on his 81st birthday at his home at South Oxford on Thursday night, Feb. 19, 1976. Mr. Rushton moved to Oxford 53 years ago and he has lived for 46 years at the same location. Son of the late Allie and Bessie Rushton and was born at Westchester Mountain in 1895. Mr. and Mrs. Rushton had 13 children, 12 of whom are still living (1976). They are Leon, Lewellyn, Percy, Richard, Muriel (Mrs. William Embree), Gloria (Mrs. Karl Norton), all of Oxford; Ivan and Lorraine, at home; Leslie of Hansford; Merville, Pictou; Nina (Mrs. George Dale) East Hampton, Mass.; and Doreen (Mrs. Clayton Polley), Pugwash. Elsie (Mrs. Laurence Wood) Hansford, passed away a few years ago. Also present were two of his sisters, Kathleen (Mrs. Os. Rushton), Oxford; and Mrs. Pearl Sutherland of Springhill.

The pupils and teacher of Oxford Junction School in 1911. They are Earl Field (dead), Harold Betts (dead), Charles Black, Charles Betts, Harold Lowther (dead), Mrs. Martin (dead), Emma Dotten, Libby Weathered, Hughena Colburn (dead), Hattie MacLean, Lizzie Field, Lizzie Colburn, Annie Betts, Lydia MacEachern, Teacher; Duncan Fillmore, Duncan Colburn (dead), Edward Warnock (dead), Robert Black, Jean MacLean, Marion Fillmore (dead), Muriel Skidmore, Mabel Betts (dead), Marie Betts. This school was converted to a home and was the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Porter until it was destroyed by fire on March 16th, 1975.

West Hansford School in 1919. Teacher and students are Joe Mayne, Laurie Sterling, Freda Macky, Olga Macky, Edna Myers, Bamford Sterling, Chas. Beels, Maude Mayne (deceased before 1975), Effie Embree, Margaret Mayne, Tensie Mayne, Eva Mayne, Agnes Mayne, Ruth Mayne. Teacher was Jean MacKintosh of Wallace.

South Oxford School in 1916. Students and teacher are Christina Graham, Margaret Langille, Julia Hansen, Andrew Webb, Irene Jeffers, Winnifred Ammon, Bernice Mattatall, Jean Ammon, Myra Myatt, Mary Graham, Frances Rushton, Maudena Tait, Alberta Embree. Allison DeWolfe, Orland Wood, Merle Wood, Arthur MacPherson, Whidden Graham, Bevere MacDormack, Steven Webb, Carmen Rushton, George MacPherson, Sherman King, Olive King, Gertrude McCormack, Viola MacPhee, Ola Embree, Winnifred Rushton, Lillian Hansen, Florence MacPherson, Geraldine Stone, Lois Stonehouse, Edson Lowther. Francis Wood, George Wood, Sherman Lowther, Curry Thompson, Fred Carroll, Willie Embree, Ira Wood, Bob Smith. Teacher Miss Mabel Langille (French River).

Lake Killarney School in 1922. Students are Blair Finley, Wilma Wood, Hazen Hollis, Norma Finley, Goldie Smith, Eva Wood, Marcel Hollis, Hazel Wood, Robert Wood (deceased), Orland Fraser, Agnes Hollis, Maynard Finley, Walter Wood. Teacher was Gertrude Jackson , Amherst Shore.

Lower (North) Mount Pleasant School in 1917. Students are Harris Dickie, Kenneth Simpson, Susie Dickie, Ray Dickie, Ola Mattinson, Nina Mattinson, Mary Ripley, Grace Mattinson, Amy Mattinson, Earnest Mattinson, Loran Simpson, Minetta King, Sadie Mayne, Frances Dickie, Lella Dickie, Ellen Mattinson, Cal Mattinson, Lorne Mattinson, and Durell Mattinson. Teacher was Miss Edith Davison. Until the pupils began attending schools in Oxford, there was two on-room schools operated at Mount Pleasant. This school (North) burned, and the South school is now the community hall.

Thomson School of 1920. Students are Borden Thomas, Sherman Armour, Birdena Palmer, Leotta Thompson, Myra MacDonald, Ethel Godfrey, Vera Ralph, Grace Patterson, Marie MacDonald, Irene Palmer, Ola Ralph, Leah Treen, Phlena Mills. Bruce Stonehouse, Arthur Armour, Ian Patterson, Murray MacDonald, Jean Armour, Lulu MacDonald, Fred Thomas, Borden Armour, Irene Rushton, Myrtle Mayne, Ivan Treen, Helen Patterson.
Teacher was Ethel Williams of Port Howe.

West Pugwash School of 1929. The teacher was Miss Helen Henderson of Rockley (now Mrs. Hilton MacLeod of Moncton and Port Philip). The students are Douglas Chase, Burton Peers, Ronald Mitchell, John Woodlock, Laura VanBuskirk, Mary Corkish, Doris Dingle and Jean Corkish. Cecil Peers (deceased), Frank Dingle, Myrtle Guilderson, Douglas Peers (deceased), Ernest Mitchell, Evelyn Dingle. Agnes Woodlock, Elsie Smith, Anna Smith, Laura Witter, Lorne Chase, Mildred Dingle, Helen Woodlock, Edna Woodlock (deceased).

On the Saturday afternoon, January 17, 1975 Mr. and Mrs. Harry Palmer of Oxford Junction were honored by members of their family, friends and neighbours on the occasion of their 66th Wedding Anniversary.

On Sunday afternoon, October 29, 1972, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Colburne, Oxford Junction were pleasantly surprised when a number of relatives and friends gathered at their home to extend congratulations on their Diamond Wedding Anniversary.

On Tuesday, December 23, 1975, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Gatchell, of Oxford celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their were married in Tatamagouche on December 23, 1925, by the Reverend Robert L. Coffin.
Ross, the only son of the late Allan and Sarah Ann Gatchell, was born at Lower Debert, NS. Mrs. Gatchell was the former Ann Margaret MacEachern, daughter of the late Hugh and Mary Ann MacEachern and was born in West Tatamagouche. The couple was blessed with two sons, Karl Douglas, and William Allan.
