A Look Back ...
Following the successful conclusion of World War I in 1918, communities across Canada looked for ways to honor and remember those who lost their lives during the war and others who served during the war.
On July 5, 1923, a statue of a Canadian war veteran was unveiled in Oxford on the lot at the corner of Main and Prince William Streets. On the monument are the names of great battles, where many of the heroes made the supreme sacrifice. Thirty veterans from Oxford and vicinity failed to return home, whose names appear on the front of the monument:

Lieut. Harold DAVID; Sgt. Chas. FORBES; Cpl. Lloyd KING; Privates - Alex AMON, Noble AUSTIN, Alex AUSTIN, Melvin BAILEY, Herman BLACK, Ira BLACK, Claude BLACK, Chauncey BROWNELL, Frank BROWNELL, Howard GORDON, Rex GORDON; Sgt. Oscar RUSHTON; Cpl. Burton KNOWLTON; Cpl. Shirley LOWTHER;
Privates - Chas. JENKINS, Harold LOCKHART, Arthur MILLER, George POWER, Llewelyn RUSHTON, Albion SUMARA, Sanford SCIDMORE, Elmer THOMPSON, C. Kerr THOMPSON, Russell THOMPSON, Allan THORNTHWAITE, Leonard TREEN, Raymond U. WALKER.
