**Oldest Citizen Passes Away

EDWARD THOMPSON, Sr.

On Sept. 5th the spectre of death removed from our midst the form of EDWARD W. THOMPSON, Sr. at the ripe old age of 91 years and 5 months.
The late Mr. THOMPSON was a Grandson of the original RICHARD THOMPSON, who immigrated to this country from England in the year 1788, and first settled in Jolicure, NB but later found his way to Cumberland County, and within the limits of what is now the town of Oxford, he hewed in the heart of the forest his first Canadian Home. This home was but a log cabin and was located near the point where the Black River empties into the River Philip. The late EDWARD was the youngest son of RALPH, who in turn was one of 10 children born to Mr. & Mrs. RICHARD THOMPSON, the earliest pioneers. From a family of 12 children, EDWARD was the last survivor. His faculties had all been retained wonderfully well, and in a reminiscent mood, he very often related clearly the earlier experiences and happenings in the molding of our town. In his earliest recollections but 5 frame houses were within the town limits, and intercourse between one town and another was accomplished on foot or by stage coach only.
During his earlier days the deceased followed various occupations, namely farming, operation of Saw Mill, Grist Mill, Tan Bark Mill, Tannery, General Store and Hotel. For a limited time he was employed on Railway Construction work in the province of Quebec, at the time the Intercolonial was being built. For the past 33 years the deceased had been a great sufferer from Rheumatism and unable to perform any work.
Being a good reader, he followed closely the current topics of the day, and since 1914 has followed the events of the Great War with untiring interest, even up to the time of his death. He leaves to mourn 3 daughters, Mrs. LOIS THORNTHWAITE and Mrs. J.S. HICKMAN of Oxford, NS, and Mrs. W.E. OXLEY of Wakefield, Mass, USA, also 3 sons.
WILBERT and BYRON of Oxford, NS and JOSEPH R. of California.
His grandchildren number 14 and his great grandchildren 17. His wife predeceased him 13 years ago.
The funeral service was held at his late home in the afternoon, Friday, Sept. 6th, a goodly number of relatives gathered to pay their last respects. Rev. P.R. HAYDEN officiated, assisted by Rev. J.W. O'BRIEN.
Pastor HAYDEN read the 70th Psalm and a part of John 14th, chapter. The text was the parting words of David to Solomon, I go the way of all the earth, etc., and many impressive lessons were taken there from to the edification and comfort of those present. The hymns Abide With Me, Rock of Ages and Safe in the Arms of Jesus, were sung. The burial occurred at Pine Grove cemetery.
