OBIT - DOW McKENNIE
After a lengthy illness, the death of Mr. Dow McKENNIE, a well known resident of East Leicester, occurred at his home on Monday, July28th, aged 76 yrs. Mr. McKENNIE was stricken with Paralysis, last March and had been in falling health. He was a lifelong Liberal in politics.
The deceased leaves his second wife, a son, Ansel W. of Winnipeg and a daughter, Mrs. Walter ANGUS of Shinimicas to mourn his loss. One brother, Robert and sisters, Mrs. H.B. LOCKHART, Mrs. Martha TRERICE and Mrs. M.T. SHIPLEY, also survive. The funeral service was held on Wednesday afternoon and was largely attended. Rev. S. KIERSTEAD of the Methodist church was in charge. The burial took place at the East Leicester cemetery.

OBIT - WILLIAM SMITH
The death of William SMITH, one of Parrsboro’s most highly esteemed citizens occurred on Thursday, July 3rd at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles FAULKENHAM.

OBIT - WENTWORTH E. ROSCOE
After a brief illness the death of Wentworth E. ROSCOE, R.C. D.C. took place at Westport last week. Mr. ROSCOE, who was 69 years of age, was one of the former ?? men of the bar of Nova Scotia. He was a forceful speaker and for four years was Mayor of the town of Kentville. For several years he was law lecturer at Acadia University and received the degree of ??? from that college.

Mr. Will WEBB of Farmington, who lately returned from overseas, was married on July 19th to Miss Catherine JOHNSTON of Dartmouth, N.S.

Miss Violet MORGAN of Newfoundland is visiting her sister Miss Cynthia MORGAN.

**Prof. and Mrs. CASSELL and little daughter have arrived fro South Lancaster, Mass and are settled in “Inglenook Bungalow” on the Academy grounds.

At 40 Rupert Street, Amherst, August 2nd by Rev. Dr. STEELE, Albert CLARK of Chipman, Queen’s county, N.B. to Elsie Reta, daughter of James E. and Mary NOILES of Laneville.

OBIT - Mrs. BURTON TRERICE
Mrs. Burton TRERICE passed away at Highland View Hospital, Amherst, 3:30 on Saturday morning. She had been taken from her home at East Leicester and an operation performed, which it was thought would improve her health. The deceased was a member of the Methodist church and leaves a large circle of relatives and friends. She was 68 years of age.
Following are the family who survives, sons, Tweddie, Amherst, Fred, East Leicester and Samuel, who is principal of a school in the Canadian West and four daughters, Mrs. PRYOR in Mass, Mrs. A. M. PURDY, Little River and Misses Ruth and Mary at home. Mr. Robert McKENNIE of East Leicester is a brother.

PUGWASH.

Mr. William MacARTNEY, recently of Toronto and his bride nee, Miss Hilda PIERS are visiting the bride’s parents, Mr. & Mrs. E.E. PIERS for a few days. They will make their home at Pugwash Jct.

WEDDING - MacRAE - HOLLIS

A very interesting social event took place at the residence of Mr. & Mrs. Alex HOLLIS, Pugwash on the morning of July 30th when their elder daughter Miss Ida Marie HOLLIS was united in marriage to Mr. Murdock Roderick MacRAE of New Glasgow, in the presence of about 25 of the immediate friends and relatives.
The parlors were beautifully decorated for the occasion by the girl friends of the bride. The marriage was at noon and promptly to the melodeons strains of Mendelssohn’s Wedding March played by Mrs. V. H. HOLLIS the bridal party took their place beneath a beautiful arch of field daisies and ivy and the Rev. M.B. WHITMAN united them in the holy bonds of matrimony.
The bride looked charming in a handsomely embroidered white georgette dress and carrying a shower bouquet of roses and ferns, at the close of the ceremony a dainty luncheon was served after which the bridal party left by motor for Oxford Jct amid showers of rice and confetti. After a short wedding trip the happy couple will make their home in New Glasgow, where the groom holds a good position. The esteem in which the bride is held was evidenced by the many handsome presents received and the best wishes of a host of friends go with Mr. & Mrs. MacRAE for a long and happy married life and much future prosperity.

WEDDING - DICKSON - HARGREAVES
A very interesting wedding took place at the bride’s home, Main Street, Springhill on Wednesday, July 30th. The parties united in matrimony were Lavern, oldest son of Mr. & Mrs. John HARGREAVES and Annie, youngest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. DICKSON. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Harold TOMKINSON, pastor of Wesley Methodist Church.

OBIT - JAMES BROWN
James BROWN, a well-known farmer of Hillaton, passed away on Monday, July 14th, after an illness of 3 weeks. Deceased was 74 yrs of age, was born in Cumberland Co., where he was visiting when suddenly stricken with a sickness, which later proved fatal.
Besides a wife he leaves six children to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate husband and father, Mrs. Laura BAKER of California, Mrs. Robert THOMPSON of Kinsley, Alberta, Mrs. Harry E. ROCKWELL, of Steam Mill Village, Kings Co, Harry of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Frederick of Hillation and Roy at home.
Also two sisters, and one brother, all residing in Cumberland Co.

OBIT - Mrs. MARY ANN TAYLOR
Mrs. Mary Ann TAYLOR, widow of Thos. TAYLOR, died at the home of Mrs. Boyd JOHNSON, Amherst on Sunday evening, aged 70 years.
Mrs. Taylor, whose maiden name was YOUNG, was born in Indiana, US coming to Williamsdale with her father when a young girl and was married to Mr. TAYLOR about 50 years ago, always residing in the old home until Mr. TAYLOR’s death 3 years ago, when Mrs. TAYLOR sold the property and removed to Amherst. Although in failing health all winter, Mrs. TAYLOR was only confined to bed two weeks and maintained all her faculties to the end, welcoming her old friends who went to see her and calmly awaited the end, which would bring her rest and freedom from weakness of body.
The remains (accompanied by Mr. & Mrs. JOHNSON) were brought home and laid to rest beside her husband, where beneath a covering of beautiful flowers they await the resurrection day. The services were conducted by Rev. J.A. NEAL in the Methodist church, the sermon being from the text “The Memory of the Just is blessed”.
The large congregation of friends gathered showed the respect and esteem of all for an old resident, a good neighbor and faithful friend.

Presentation to Oldest Nova Scotian
An event of interest at the Nova Scotia Sanatorium was the presentation Monday morning to CHARLES JONES, a respected colored citizen, who lives near the Sanatorium. Mr. JONES can claim the distinction of being the oldest person living in Nova Scotia. He was born at or near Amherst in June 1813 and is now in his 107th year. He is a familiar figure about the sanatorium and during the past 2 years has made very many friends among the military patients. The presentation was made on behalf of his friends by Mr. THEAKSTON. Mr. JONES replied and feelingly expressed his thanks. In spite of his age he is a man of remarkable activity. His eyesight is good and as one person remarked “he can hear a whisper”.
His memory is clear and he has many an interesting story from the past. He however suffers somewhat from rheumatism. The little gathering broke up with three cheers and tiger for Mr. JONES.

OBIT - ALEX SUTHERLAND
The death of Mr. Alex SUTHERLAND occurred at his home on Tuesday morning. The funeral was held on Wednesday, Rev. G.R. KYLE officiating. Members of Mystic Tie Lodge of Oddfellows were present and accompanied the remains from the house to the station, the interment taking place at River John. Further particulars later.

DEATH
The Journal learns with regret of the death of Mrs. FISHER, who was Miss Lena BLACK, a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. S.G. BLACK, of this town. She leaves a husband and one child.

** Mrs. H.S. FOSS and children, of Bevingly, Mass are visiting the formers sister, Mrs. J.W. GILROY.

** Mrs. Ozro KEITH and son, Clifford returned on Monday after their vacation here, to their home at Providence, R.I.

** Mrs. Sadie GOULD of California, Mrs. James Barker and her son, Private Russell DICKIE of Hantsport, N.S. late of the Royal Dragoons, serving in France are visiting relatives and friends in town.

** Miss Lena VanAMBURG and Miss Georgie FRASER, who have been spending three weeks vacation in town returned Monday to take up their duties as professional nurses at Gloucester, Mass.

** Miss Alexia THOMPSON from the United States, niece of the late Clay THOMPSON is visiting relatives in town.

ENGAGEMENTS
Mr. & Mrs. Samuel MYATT announce the engagement of their daughter, Ethel Georgia to Russell Bancroft HARVEY of Grand Manan, N.B. Marriage to take place at an early date.

Dr. and Mrs. O.R. SALTER announce the engagement of their niece, Winnifred Charlotte DAVIS to Mr. Gordon Charles GRIMM of Halifax, the marriage to take place early in September.

OBIT - Mrs. JOHN HAZEN SMITH
Amherst, N.S. July 29th
The death occurred at an early hour Monday morning of Mrs. John Hazen SMITH at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James A. McKENZIE, Havelock Street. She leaves to mourn their loss, three daughters, Mrs. James A. McKENZIE, Amherst, Mrs. R.S. McCABE, Truro and Mrs. R. PERKINS, Beverley, Mass and one son, Edgar H. SMITH of Fort Lawrence.
Interment will be at Dorchester, N.B. the former home of the deceased.
