His life's work was spent as a sawyer in the lumbermill industry. He was a charter member of the Southampton Lodge 54 and a dual member of the Oxford Lodge 26 of the Knights of Pythias and a past Grand Prelate in Grand Lodge, member of El Shebab Santha 21 Lodge, member of the Widows Son 48 Masonic Lodge, and also Cumberland PC party. He enjoyed his family, hunting, fishing, reading and baseball games. He is survived by his wife, the former Evelyn (Gallagher) Brown; son, Ernest "Sonny" (Sharon), Oxford Jct., Cumberland Co.; daughter, Sharon (Edward) Tattersall, River Hebert, Cumberland Co.; sister, Beryl (William) Atkinson, Amherst; grandchildren, Tim and Julie Brown, Roxanne Tattersall, Jennifer Dunlop; great-grandchildren, Brittany Brown and Kierden Dunlop; several nieces and nephews. She was educated in Springhill Schools and graduated a registered nurse from Moncton City Hospital in 1947. She worked 32 years in All Saints Hospital, Springhill, where the last 15 years as third floor supervisor and retired in 1979 due to ill health. She is survived by her husband, Harold, at home; son, Robert (Sandra), Springhill; brother, John Godfrey, Coquitlam, B.C.; grandchildren, Philip and Stacey Carter, Springhill; several nieces and nephews. Saints Hospital, Springhill. Born in East Amherst he was a son of the late Silas and Etta (Smith) Stiles. Following school he worked in different sawmills in Cumberland, Colchester and Westmoreland Counties for 15 years before going to work at Canada Car in Amherst. He then worked on survey crews for the Nova Scotia Department of Highways until his retirement in the early 70's. During this time he also owned and operated a farm until later years. He played hockey for the East Amherst Hurricanes during the 30's and 40's. He taught school for over 36 years of which 25 years were at Oxford Regional High School, retiring as vice principle. His favorite pastime was making and playing violins. He was a life member of the Maritime Fiddlers' Association. He enjoyed curling, fishing, and gardening. FINLEY, Blair Ephriam - 85, East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash, and formerly of Oxford, Cumberland Co., died December 20, 1999, in the East Cumberland Lodge. Born in Linden, Cumberland Co., he was a son of the late Albert E. and Amelia H. (Rushton) Finley. As a young man he operated the family farm along with his brother Arthur, Lake Killarney, Cumberland Co. He moved to Hartford, Connecticut in the mid 1950's, where he was employed with G. Fox Department Store for approximately 10 years, until the time of his retirement at which time he moved back to Oxford. He was an avid fisherman, trapper and gardener, with a great love for the outdoors. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving are stepdaughters, Grace, Jean, Elizabeth "Teeny"; stepsons, Wallace "Wally", Lester "Buster", all of USA. RUSHTON, Reverend Vincent Vernon - 79, 1026 Evergreen Avenue, New Minas, died Sunday, December 19, 1999, at home. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late Warren and Almeda (Embree) Rushton. He graduated from Acadia Divinity College and was ordained in the Billtown Baptist Church in 1943. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Masters of Arts Degree, a Bachelor of Divinity and a Masters of Divinity, a Bachelors Degree in Education, and a Masters of Education, all from Acadia University. He also studied at the Andover Newton Seminary near Boston. He was a senior pastor in the charges of Billtown, Lawrencetown, New Ross, Canning and Bedford. He served in the missionary service in Canada and India for 20 years. He was a founding member of the Atlantic Baptist Fellowship and compiled his own personal archives on Atlantic Baptist activities. He taught school and held the position of guidance counselor at Cornwallis District High School as well as teaching at King's Regional Vocational School and Kodiakanal School, South India. He served as chaplain at Camp Aldershot during the 1960's and Chaplain of the Naval Cadets in Canning. He was a member of St. George's Masonic Lodge, Wolfville, was an avid photographer and loved working with people. He is survived by his wife, the former M. Jean Quigg; son, Robert and wife Barbara, New Minas; sister, Ula Noiles, Newport, Hants Co.; brother, Caleb, Springhill; granddaughters, Christianne and Heather. McKIM, Raymond Docherty "Doc" - 79, 47 Prince Albert St., Pugwash, died January 1, 2000, in North Cumberland Memorial Hospital, Pugwash. Born in Wallace Bay, Cumberland Co., he was a son of the late Robert and Annie (Docherty) McKim. He was a decorated veteran of the Second World War, having signed up for service in December 1942 and served overseas from January 1944-March 1946 with the 129 Airfield-39 Reconnaissance Wing. Following his wartime service he first worked as an independent trucker and later for McNamara Marine, Ontario finally retiring with McKeil Marine, Ontario where he worked as both a marine engineer and tugboat operator. Surviving are his wife, the former Claire Withrow; one niece; four nephews. SARSON, Charles Henry - 83, 66 Willow St., Amherst, and formerly of 9 Morris St., Springhill and Pugwash, died on Friday, December 31, 1999, in Highland View Regional Hospital, Amherst. Born in Linden, Cumberland Co., he was a son of the late Daniel and Ella (Stewart) Sarson. He was a member of the St. Andrews-Wesley United Church, Springhill, and a member of the Laurie Masonic Lodge 70, AF&AM in Springhill, having received his 50-year jewel in 1994. For a number of years, he owned and operated a convenience store in Springhill and following this, he served as the registrar of deeds for Cumberland County serving in the Amherst office, from where he retired in 1980. He spent his lifetime devoted to his family and to the Masonic Order. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by his wife, the former Ethel E Phillips; sons, Douglas (Shelley) Sarson, North Bay, Ont. and Donald (Cathy) Sarson, Amherst; a grandson, Dylan Sarson, Amherst. She had lived in Ontario where she had run a boarding house and worked for Martin's Frozen Foods. SMITH, Lauraine "Chippy" - 49, 2 Princess St., Springhill, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 3, 2000, at her residence. Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Shirley (Matthews) MacKinnon. Chippy attended and graduated Springhill High School and St Francis Xavier University, Antigonish. Her working career commenced at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax and after her marriage, she lived in Cape Breton before moving back to Springhill, where she and Lorne owned and operated Lorne's Men's Wear and later, The Springhill Candy Kitchen. Since 1989, she worked with social services as a caseworker with The County of Cumberland and acting director for The Town of Springhill; co-ordinator for the SAR's Liaison Committee; and until her retirement due to ill health in 1997, as a caseworker with The Town of Amherst. She served on many committees and volunteered her time most recently being secretary to the executive of the Liberal Party for Cumberland South. She enjoyed her family, her many friends and her cottage at the beach in West Pugwash. She is survived by her beloved children, Tammy, Halifax and Trevor, Springhill; brother and best friend, John "Jock" and wife Faith MacKinnon, Dartmouth; several nieces and nephews. She enjoyed making and giving away home made candy at Christmas. She was an avid quilter and knitter. She had a great love of music. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. HARRIS, Margaret Adele "Mony" - Died suddenly in her 87th year, in Huntsville, Ont. on the 13 of January, 2000. She was married to W.J. "Jack" Harris, Toronto. Niece of Cyrus S. Eaton, Pugwash, she spent many summers in her home in Pugwash, where with her sister, Billie and her mother, Eva R. Webb, she had been a faithful supporter of her Uncle Cyrus in his endeavors for world peace and was honorary chair of the Pugwash Park Commissioners. She will be fondly remembered by her nine surviving nephews and nieces and their families in Ontario, the United States, Italy and Australia. She will be sadly missed by her great-great-nieces, Julia and Jenny, their mother, Christine, their uncle, Rob and their grandparents, Gianni and Susan Brenciaglia, with whom she had shared so many happy hours in the last year of her life. She will be laid to rest beside her mother and sisters in the Eaton Cemetery, Pugwash Junction at a later date.

COOK, Dr. David V. - Kentville, died January 19, 2000. Born in Amherst, he was a son of Gladys (Trenholme) and the late Vaughn Cook. He was a graduate of Gordon Divinity College in Boston, Mass. He received a bachelor of arts degree in 1964 and a masters of religious education in 1969. Recently his educational endeavors lead him to a Doctor of Ministry degree from Acadia Divinity College in 1997. From as early as 1959 he had been involved in pastoral ministry beginning with summer and student pastorates throughout the Maritime Provinces and state of Vermont. It was during his pastorship in Pleasantville, that he married Donna Crouse in October of 1965. His first full time pastorate took him to Highfield St., U.B.C. in Moncton, N.B. as the minister of Christian Education. GRANT, Stanley E. - 85, 6 Smith St., Amherst, passed away at home on Saturday, January 22, 2000, at his home. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Cameron and Alberta (Nelson) Grant. Stan loved children and was a co-founder of the Amherst Little League Organization in the early 1950s and volunteered his time to young people's baseball for many years. He was a past master of the Masonic Order, Acacia Lodge 8, Amherst. For his entire working life, Stan was an employee of Maritime Tel & Tel, from where he retired in 1970. He was a loving father and husband and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Bertha Annand; son, Rod (wife Joan), Lower Sackville; sisters, Evelyn Marsman and Doris Wallace, both of Truro; granddaughter, Carole, Moncton; several nieces and nephews. Born in East Wallace, she was a daughter of the late Clara (Waugh) (Patton) Browne and C. Tupper Patton. She was a homemaker and spent most of her life in Malagash. She moved to Halifax in 1968 following the death of her husband where she resided with her son until 1995 at which time she became a resident of East Cumberland Lodge, Pugwash. NEWTON, Grant W. - 89, Parrsboro and Venice, Fla., died Thursday, January 27, 2000, at home, Parrsboro. Born in Odgensburg, N.Y., he was a son of the late Willis and Agnes (Warr en) Newton. He was a dispatcher with the Newark, New Jersey Fire Department for 25 years. He later was a realtor for 20 years in Morristown, N.J. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 68 years and was a member of the Shrine Banjo Band, Sahib Temple, Sarasota, Florida. He was also a member of the Mad River Masonic Lodge, Waitsfield, Vermont. PASHKOSKI, Stanley - Affectionately known as "Bubba", 72 years, 14 Rodney Branch Road, Leamington, Cumb. Co., passed away Thursday, January 27, 2000, in All Saints Hospital, Springhill, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late Alexander and Wadyslawa (Holc) Pashkoski. He was a former coal miner and one of the bare faced rescue miners during the Springhill Mining disasters of 1956 and 1958 as a result he was awarded the Silver Cross Medal of bravery from the Governor General of Canada. Following his years as a miner he moved to Montreal, Que., where he was employed with Texaco Refineries returning to Nova Scotia in 1969 to work at the Heavy Water Plant in Port Hawksbury. He retired to Springhill in 1989 where we worked as a tour guide at the Springhill Miners Museum until June 1998. He was a member of the St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Springhill; 50 year member and Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus; current President of the Springhill Chapter of the Nova Scotia Kidney Foundation; member of the Board of Directors of the GOVRC Springhill; member of SOAR (Springhill Oxford Amherst Regions) Health Board; past president of the Springhill Senior Citizens organization; past member of the Cumberland Regional School Board; past member of the Richmond County School Board; past member of the Louisdale Lions Club; former player and coach of both hockey and baseball teams at various local and provincial levels and former Scout Leader. TABOR, John Robert "Jack" - 66, 101 McGee Street, Springhill passed away suddenly on Friday January 28, 2000, in All Saints Hospital, Springhill. Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late Arthur David and Annie Elizabeth (MacPhee) Tabor. Educated in the Springhill school system. An avid sports fan and as a youth he was involved with Boy Scouts. His early years were spent as a coal miner and was one of the bare faced rescue miners during the Springhill mining disasters of 1956 and 1958 as a result the Carnagie Medal was awarded to the Town of Springhill. He worked as a stage hand at CBC Halifax; was a member and Chapel Steward of the St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church, Springhill; was the last candidate to run in Cumberland Centre for CCF political party and a Honorary member of the NDP; member and Past Chancellor of the Cumberland Lodge 5 Knights of Pythias; presenter of the Knights of Pythias Scholarship at the Springhill High School and Nova Scotia Community College, Cumberland Campus; organizer of the Davis Day Ceremonies annually; President of the Miners Memorial Club; President organizer of the Mine Workers Pension Club; volunteer worker at weekly Rotary suppers; helped organize and participated in the Springhill West End Day; avid gardener, enjoyed his cottage at Diligent River and enjoyed being with his family but above all he enjoyed being a father to his grandchildren.
