back to the early 1800's when Michael O'Rourke and his wife Mary landed in Holyrood "
One source, and the above
quote fits, has them marrying in 1925...so it is possible they came to Nfld.
with their families and then married.
A note from Sheree, one of the Holyrood
genealogy interest group, says"He landed on the
south side of Holyrood Nfld., known as the Grove with
his wife Mary. She was a native of Ardmore Co. Waterford
"1881 Feb 05 - Gazette;

There was an old hotel ran

and an old O'Rourke house still stands in Holyrood
today.

The
railway was built with pick, shovel and wheelbarrow; rock cuts were drilled and
blasted by hand through almost impassable terrain.
In
1893 the railway was completed from Placentia Junction to Norris Arm and was
known as the Halls Bay Railroad (Northern Division). In the fall of 1897, the
railway was completed from Norris Arm to Grand Bay less than two miles from
Port aux Basques and was known as the "Newfoundland Northern and Western
Railway." In early June of 1898, the last rails were laid, and the final
link was completed to Port aux Basques.
Newfoundlanders
have told me that the Railroad was built as cost plus, which means the company
got paid for the length of rails they laid. So they didn't take the shortest
route but the easiest and longest route. Some payment was made in land so the
heirs of this company still own vast areas of land in
