Q1
03 Jan 2004
From: Michael Martin
Subject: Gates/Mosher

I am trying to find a hole in my genealogy and need help:

1. I believe my great grandfather was a Samuel Gates whose wife may have been Rosanne. I believe he was born at gates Mountain in the Oldham Gates line. His cousin was Susan Gates Roach, the sister of Caleb gates, and the wife of George Roach. He had five children: James(b. 1873), Charlotte(b. 1870), William(b. 1875), Frances(b1876), & Agnes(my grandmother, b. 1882). He later moved to either NY or NJ. I know nothing of his parents, siblings, birth & death dates, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

2. I believe there is a Gates relationship also here with W.B. Mosher and the house at Mosher's Corners. Irving Mosher, who owned a grocery store in Margaretsville and later this house, was also involved.

3. Lastly, I understand that during the mid 1800s, one of my relatives(an uncle, I believe)came from Victoria Vale to Margaretsville to work on building ships. He married a local girl and had some children. He later became demented; came home one night and axed to death his wife and children. The ice man found the bodies the next day and found the uncle hanging over the dock in the Bay of Fundy when the tide went out. He was buried in the old Margaretsville cemetary, but the body was stolen by grave robbers who sold it to a doctor in Halifax. I understand a story may have been written about this incident by a historian in Margaretsville in the 1960s/70s. Any clarification of this would be helpful or any ties to #1 & #2 above.

From: Pearl Saunders
Subject: Clark

Just recently I reviewed all the Annapolis County queries from 1997 to the present. I note a number of people are seeking Clark and in particular individuals by the name of John Clark. I am researching my
Ogilvie family and in this regard have a John Clark, born 14 January 1783 as marrying Eleanor Ogilvie (birth year uncertain) on 14 November 1812. I have children listed for them as: Mary Ann Clark (b. 12
September 1813); Robert Clark (b. 17 July 1815); William Clark; Eliza Clark; and Charlotte Clark.

If anyone has any connection with these individuals, I would be most pleased to hear from you. Please contact me direct.

Q4
11 Jan 2004
From: Percy Nelson
Subject: Nelson

I will be traveling to Annapolis Valley Nova Scotia in early June of this year. I would like to be able to find the location and residence of my GGrandfather and Grandfather, somewhere in Annapolis Royal.
Clues:
1. In the Saint John, NB. 1851 census John Nelson was married to and living with Mary Elizabeth(Bedford) Nelson, she was from Nova Scotia.
2. In the 1871 St Martins NB census Mary E is listed as a widow and having 5 children including my GGrandfather Joseph B Nelson.
3. Joseph was married in Saint John NB to a Lavina Phillips in 1877, she was born in Nova Scotia.
4. In the Nova Scotia census of 1881 Joseph and Lavina are listed in Annapolis Royal, Annapolis, Nova Scotia, District 16, Sub-District J, Page Number 93, Household Number 435 along with my Grandfather William James Nelson he was born in 1880.
5. Joseph,Lavina and William James move to NB and their story goes on.
6. However Joseph's sibling Herbert Wallace Nelson appears in the 1901 Nova Scotia census District 26 Annapolis, S. District A, Annapolis Royal page 21 Household 186, along with his wife Louisa (Carter) Nelson and 8 Children.

Is it possible for someone to find these locations using the census information. I would be forever grateful if someone could be of assistance in finding these locations

Q27
20 Jul 2004
From: Joseph Anderson
Subject: Thomas Anderson

Calnek’s History of Annapolis County shows Thomas Anderson and Thomas Anderson jun (p 262). This is in a Return of Military Settlers Located at the Dalhousie Settlement.

The Annapolis County GenWeb site includes the following item re Port George:

“Thomas Anderson was an artilleryman in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. After the war he was given a tract of land in Dalhousie. In 1820 he was recommended by the Earl of Dalhousie to become the first carpenter of all building projects. He had at least two sons, Thomas Jr. and John. When the shipbuilding industry began on the Bay of Fundy John came and became a Master shipbuilder. Thomas Jr. Went to Port Lorne worked as a carpenter and fisherman.”

My Great Grandfather was Thomas Anderson. He died Nov. 9 1910 at age 93 years. He would be too young to have been the Thomas jun listed in Calnek’s book. He did however live in Port Lorne (my birthplace) until some time after 1881. His first son was named John which might be further evidence of a connection. He is buried in the Gibson’s Cemetery in West Dalhousie.

I am trying to confirm (or refute) a connection between the Calnek listed Andersons and my Great Grandfather. Do you know if there are any census data from circa 1820 that might clarify the matter?
