From: Arthur Clayton
Subject: Clayton Family

I have been researching my Clayton Family of Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. It appears that our Clayton Roots were Loyalists emigrating from the United States into Canada. It seems the first Claytons landed at Digby; N.S. The Town of Digby was founded in 1783 by the approximately 1500 Loyalists who left the New England States on the H.M.S. ATALANTA under the leadership of Rear Admiral Digby. A previous attempt at settlement had been made in 1766, but the colony of Conway failed. The Loyalists who landed with Admiral Digby were given a grant of 120,000 acres of land between Annapolis and Saint Mary's Bay. Joseph Clayton, Loyalist, came to Digby Township, where he was granted 200 acres of land in 1784; married 20 Nov 1787, Mary Clark of Digby. The records of Trinty Anglican Church show they had 4 children; Joseph Jr, Paddy, Thomas, and Kitty. A large map located in the genealogy section of the Middleton museum shows that two of the Clayton children initials T. Clayton and J. Clayton owned property at Youngs Cove, N.S. My Father and Grand Father came from Youngs Cove.

I am missing about 2 generations. Also would like to know where Joseph Clayton came from or other Claytons from Annapolis/Digby Area. I am also researching Frail, Hubley, Milbury, and Cress.

Subject: Dunn, Wilson, Barrowman

I am just beginning my research in Nova Scotia (1820's-1840's). The names I am researching are DUNN, WILSON and BARROWMAN. All were involved in coal mining and engineering. The Dunn family came to Nova Scotia probably between 1826 and 1839. Robert Dunn married Margaret Wilson about late 1830's. Robert's father, Robert married Elizabeth Barrowman in Scotland in 1804.

From: Gene Hale
Subject: John Hale

I need some help in locating where John Hale Died. He was born Sept. 26, 1745 in Boxford, Essex, MA and died about 1816 in Canada. This is all I have. He married Mary Lyons Feb 23, 1786 in Cornwalis Township, Kings County, N.S. and she died there on Dec 31, 1789. He then married Elizabeth Weare on Nov 8, 1791 in Granville Township. Elizabeth was born on April 13, 1769 in Bridgetown, N.S. I have seen her Surname spelled so many different ways that I'm not sure of the spelling. John and Elizabeth had 3 children that I know of.

Gilbert Hale b. abt. 1792 in Annapolis County
Joseph William Hale b. Sept. 12, 1802 in Clementsport, Annapolis, N.S.
James Hale b. May 23, 1805 at Keswick River, York County, N.S.

Any help on locating John's exact date of death and the location will be greatly appreciated. Or where I might write to find the information I need.

From: John Thurber
Subject: Boles/Newcomb/Tupper/Morton

Wondering if someone could shed some light on the following families : - Maj. Lemuel Morton, M.P.P. (1753 -1811) married Martha Newcomb (1753-1811), in Annapolis Co., N.S. (date unk.). Lemuel was a son of Elkanah Morton and Rebecca ( Tupper?), who had 9 children :

(1) - John Morton M.P.P. (1781-1858) md. Ann Cogswell.
(2) - William (1782 - 1848)
(3) - James (1783 -1811)
(4) - George E. (1785 -1809)
(5) - Holmes (b.1788) md. Christina Webster.
(6) - Charles (1789 - 1858) md. Mary Woodworth.
(7) - Guy (b. 1791) md. 1815, Judith Morse
(8) - Rebecca (b. 1793) md. William Burbridge.
(9) - Mary Alice (1799-1851).

Two of Guy Morton's daughters married Alexander Cochran Tupper, son of Sarah Bowles and Eliakim Tupper. I suspect that my g-g- grandfather, William Charles Morton, ties into this family of Lemuel Morton, though I have no proof as yet. My William Charles Morton was born 1 March, 1826 and died 2 May, 1902. He married on 17 Nov., 1844, to Sarah Ann Boles (1820-1856). Their children were : - James, Mary, Triphena, Alice, Emma Jane (my g-grandmother), John, and Sarah. Do you see the similarity of names ??? That's five of the names of Lemuel Morton's children !! - Is anyone researching these lines - would love to hear from you !!!

From: Ray Chute
Subject: Chutes

I found my grandfather on the SSDI and wrote off for his application from which I found out who his parents were. His mother was listed as Sarah Adeline MILLS; however, I've since located a marriage of George T. Chute to Sarah A. MAYS in Conecuh County, Alabama on Dec. 19, 1866. I can only assume that the data on the SS application was incorrect. I know my grandfather should have known his mother's maiden name. The application was typed and he didn't type so I guess the clerk made a mistake or misunderstood and my grandfather didn't proofread the application when he signed it. I can also find other references to Sarah A. MAYS but none to MILLS. Most of the larger databases I've checked (Ancestry.com, LDS church) seem to have the same data and lack the data I need. Therefore, I would greatly appreciate any information and tips you can provide.

From: Ken Clark
Subject: Mockler family

I am researching my Mockler family ancestry and wondered if you can be of assistance. The Mocklers who came to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and later to the US, were descendants of Patrick Mockler of Cashel, Tipperary Co. Ireland. Patrick was married twice: first to Mary Healy, second to Honorah Heffernan. It is believed that Patrick and Honorah came to Nova Scotia sometime around 1816. Patrick Mockler died Feb. 28, 1855 and is buried in Middleton Cemetery, Brule Parish, Colchester Co. Nova Scotia. Patrick was a cooper in Ireland and may have been involved in shipbuilding in Nova Scotia. The names of his children were: Thomas b. ca. 1804 in Cashel married Elizabeth Shea in NS. Wiliam b. May 1807 Cashel married but wife's name unknown John b. May 1809 married Ellen McCarthy. He settled at River John and was a well known shipbuilder. They had 13 children, including Capt. Patrick Mockler, a famed sea captain, who lived at Brule and who donated a substantial sum of money to St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish where Mockler Hall is named after him. Patrick (no data) Hannah married Edward Burke-11 children Catherine born Aug. 8, 1816 in Cashel. Married Michael Hogan and had 10 children. Died Dec. 2, 1902.

I am looking for information about any of the above individuals, particularly Patrick Mockler, the emigrant. Capt. Patrick Mockler's home in Brule was named Lookout House and was a landmark building. It may still be standing even though it was constructed in the late 1850's. It overlooked the bay and had a watch tower where Capt. Mockler observed his ships heading out to sea.

From: Dave Hammaker
Subject: Trout

I am researching the historyof the John Trout family from Pennsylvania. John Trout was born circa 1781 supposedly on a voyage from England to North American. Family legend indicates that the ship he and his parents came on landed at Port Royal. I recently came across some info that indicated the name of Annapolis Royal had orginally been called Port Royal. Since it is believed that familyof John Trout was English, there would have been a good possibility that the ship did indeed land in Canada. I am looking for any information on a Trout family that might have landed at or near the areas described above in the early 1780s. Very possible that John Trout's father could have been part of the British navy or a seaman on a merchant ship. Any info appreciated.

: Bush Family

I am searching for records on DUNCAN BUSH. I believe that he lived in the area of Annapolis Royal from at least the period of 1875 on. He married ANN OWEN DEVERS and they had at least one child, MATTIE MARTHA (maybe MARTIN) BUSH born January 30, 1875, supposedly in Annapolis Royal. We are unaware of any siblings though do not discount that possibility. We have found ANN in the 1901 census located in Annapolis Royal, living with a grandson, ROBERT A BUSH, aged 8, and either her mother or mother-in-law, LAVINA (possibly LOUISA) OWENS. Q37
18 Mar 2000
From: Lisa Zajkowski
Subject: Vital records from 1801

I need to find some proof of birth for Jane Snow, who was born September 4, 1801 in Granville, Annapolis County. She was the daughter of Josiah Snow & Elizabeth Shaw, who married there in 1781.

I am trying to collect all the proof I need to submit my membership to the Mayflower Society, but other than a gravestone that just says "Jane," and no proof of death, I have nothing to prove she was the daughter of Josiah & Elizabeth.

I am sure there are no birth certificates from 1801, but might there be a baptismal record, or other entry? In searching the NS Genweb, I was surprised to find very little information on Annapolis and Digby Counties, which is where many of the Loyalists settled. So, I have no idea whether records or churches exist for this time period.

It has been a while since I have posted about the above people. I have that John Graves settled in Granville after serving in the American Revolution. I have that he is a native of Dublin which could be true, but I rather suspect it could be elsewhere I Ireland, but that Dublin was the nearest port. He fought at Bunker's Hill and was discharged to Annapolis. I am wondering if he might have born on Sept. 24 1742 Mountrath Queen Ireland (IGI) since it was it is stated in the history of Annapolis County that he was born in the middle of the last century so I took it as about the 1750's.

He married Elizabeth Graves at Granville. I would like to know more about her family.

They had:
Esther, Charlotte, Rachel, Susan, John, David, Thomas, Eliza.

To find out more about his time in the Am. Rev. I am wondering where I should be looking.

Subject: Bent Genealogy

I am currently working on a geneology project and am at wits end trying to find Martin Bent and Mary Rose (Husband and Wife). They are the parents of my husband's great grandfather Edward Bent, born in Nova Scotia according to his death records. They also list Martin and Mary as being from New Brunswick on the same death certificate. Edward was born in the 1860's and had four children--Fred, Lester, Myrtle, and Sarah.

Myrtle Bent (my mother-in-law's mother) was born in the year 1900 in Margaretville, NS. I cannot find anyone who has any info on them. It may be that Martin Bent's family came from Massachusetts/NewEngland area when John and Jesse Bent arrived--maybe they are descendent's of them--whatever the case, I cannot make the connection and have spent hundreds of hours. I am awaiting a heart transplant and would like to have this resolved soon for my children's sake--I would appreciate any help you can give me. I have made a connection w/Lyndsey Wood, who has done extensive research on the Bents, but she come up w/nothing for Martin/Mary Bent. I have also talked to the Lund family in New Brunswick to no avail.

Annapolis Co. Ancestry

I have come to some deadends in researching what I believe to be Annapolis County ancestors.

1) Keziah Hill, b 1748, d. 1828; married John Bath, b. 1751, d. 1816. John Bath immigrated from Britian abt 1770 and settled in Granville, where he married Keziah Hill. Calbek in his book on the History of Annapolis County states that Keziah Hill was from an old area family, which would suggest Planter connection, but I have not been able to locate the name.

2) Samuel Willoughby; his son was Augustus Willoughby, b. 1771 and married Elizabeth Starr. I have unsuccessful in my search for any information on the Willoughby family.

3) Starr family. August Willioughby married Elizabeth Starr, daughter of David Starr, b. 1742, d. 1831. LDS data states that David Starr was born in New England. When did this family move to Annapolis area?

4) Potter family: I have two connections to the Potter family of Nova Scotia. The first is Susanna Potter, b. 1752 in Halifax (LDS data) and d. 1817. She was married to David Starr. Was this Potter connected with the Potter family of New England? My second Potter connection is Mary Potter, daughter of Nathaniel. She married James Brown, b. 1784. They had a daughter Mary, b. 1770 and d. 1802.

There is a large Potter family in Clementsville, Annapolis County, and I have checked the cemetery listings on you site, but have not been able to make any matches. Do you have any information on the Potters?

I have compiled a reasonably sound genealogy of my family (Shelburne, Yarmouth and Annapolis Counties). Some of the primary surnames: Crosby, Hilton, Cann, Nickerson, Bath, Dane, Cunningham, Covell, Crowell, Corning and Devine). I would be happy to do any look-ups related to these genealogies.
