Have been researching my ancestors in N.S. for 15 years. My burning question is looking for the ancestry of my g.g.grandfather, Josiah Burrell, born @Clementsport ~1829 and died Sept. 25, 1911. Also the Bertaux family back to Phillip. Somone had a question on that ancestry. All I know so far is Phillip and wife Mary fled France in 1685 and went to either Island of Jersey or Guernsey. When I retire I hope to check out the channel islands. Also have some info on the Rice, Hicks and Spurr families as they married into the other families in Annapolis Royal and surrounding towns.

Q30
11 Feb 1999
From: Arthur Clayton
Subject: CLAYTON FAMILY RESEARCH

I have been researching my Clayton Family of Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. It appears that our Clayton Roots were Loyalists emigrating from the United States into Canada. It seems the first Claytons landed at Digby; N.S. The Town of Digby was founded in 1783 by the approximately 1500 Loyalists who left the New England States on the H.M.S. ATLANTA under the leadership of Rear Admiral Digby. A previous attempt at settlement had been made in 1766, but the colony of Conway failed. The Loyalists who landed with Admiral Digby were given a grant of 120,000 acres of land between Annapolis and Saint Mary's Bay. Joseph Clayton, Loyalist, came to Digby Township, where he was granted 200 acres of land in 1784; married 20Nov 1787, Mary Clark of Digby. The records of Trinty Anglican Church show they had 4 children; Joseph Jr, Paddy, Thomas, and Kitty. A large map located in the genealogy section of the Middleton museum shows that two of the Clayton children initials T. Clayton and J. Clayton owned property at Youngs Cove, N.S. My Father and Grand Father came from Youngs Cove.

I am missing about 2 generations. Also would like to know where Joseph Clayton came from. I am also researching Frail, Hubley, Milbury, and Cress. My family tree can be accessed on my Home Page: http://www.echelon.ca/aclayton

Q31
12 Feb 1999
From: Lois & Ron Jenkins
Subject: Looking for a lost JEFFERSON

In my search for JEFFERSON descendants of the first JEFFERSONs to come to the Annapolis Royal area from Yorkshire, Eng., I spoke to a descendant whom I cannot tie to the rest, because she doesn't know enough about her own immediate ancestry. Perhaps someone on this list can help.

It seems her grandfather, who as near as she can determine was a Henry JEFFERSON, b. ca 1880, proabably from the Bear River, NS area, moved to St. John, NB, married (could possibly have married prior to going to NB), and he and his wife had 4 sets of twins. He was a seaman, and sailed out of St. John on a "wooden ship." He died at sea around 1915, when this woman's mother, his daughter Nellie, was about 5 years old. Nellie was one of the youngest sets of twins. After his death, the children were placed out for "adoption." Nellie, this woman's mother, would never talk about the family, so there is little to go on. She does know that one of the girl's names was Florence.

I know this is like looking for a needle in a haystack, but I thought it was worth a try. ANY help greatly appreciated.

Q33
19 Feb 1999
From: Jeni
Subject: Elias PECK and Peck census records

I have posted before about searching for the parents and family of Elias PECK. He may have been born between 1850-1870 in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. My grandmother says she is certain that he came from the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia... and American born as I am, I am not certain if Annapolis Valley is a region that happens to include Annapolis County... that's where I am starting my search, anyway. I have no knowledge of his parents. His sons were named William, Robert, and James Austin. His daughters were named Elthel, Anna, and Wealthea. Those would be the only clues I have as to the names of his parents and siblings, if he chose to name his children after any of them. I have seen on the Genforum.com site that there is at least one Elias Peck around, but he is too old to be my Elias. I would think that there's a good chance they might be related since they have the same name, however.

Subject:
Jane Pearce and the Pearces of Aylesford and Wilmot

My great grandmother Jane Pearce of Aylesford (formerly Miss Jane Magee of N.J.) was certainly alive in 1883; she signed an indenture that year in Aylesford. It would seem that when her husband(James3 William2 William1 Pearce) and children moved to Edmonton in 1886 she was dead. Because she was Presbyterian and because she lived right on the Aylesford / Wilmot Kings / Annapolis border I wonder if perhaps she is buried in Annapolis. There is no stone for her in Kings. Can anyone check their information on Annapolis graves for me? Actually I am interested in ANY Pearce gravestones in Annapolis, particularly Wilmot.

From: Lisa Zajkowski
Subject:
Snow Family of Granville

I am looking for information on the family of Jabez Snow and Elizabeth Doane, who came to Granville from Massachusetts around 1784. Their children were all born in Eastham, Barnstable, Mass, but probably married in Nova Scotia:

Josiah (b 1755) married Elizabeth Shaw
William (b 1763) married Margaret Winchester
Silvanus (b 1765) married (1) Mary Clark (2) Mary Lent
Edward (b 1771) married Sophia?

All of their children were born in Granville, NS. I have a list of children for all but Edward. I found him in the 1851 Carleton census, in Wakefield, NB, age 80, with wife Sophia (age 71). He is living with son Jesse Snow, Jesse's wife Hannah Rideout, and 8 children of Jesse & Hannah.

I would like to find out who Edward's wife was, and his other children. Also, info on the children of Josiah, William & Silvanus. I have some NB reference books, but none for Nova Scotia. It is impossible to trace the female children without knowing who they married.

Is anyone else related to the Snow family?

Catherine Goldsmith and Capt William Askew Armstrong

I am seeking the Marraige date in the Annapolis area of Catherine Goldsmith born in St Andrews, Charlotte, New Brunswick, on April 10th 1792 and Capt William Askew Armstrong, birth place unknown but we suspect the UK. We have been told that the red to this marraige was in the suplement to the History of the County of Annapolis, by A W Savary (1913) p72, but we have no other details of the marraige.

Is anyone researching the Goldsmith and Armstrong Family please. After Marraige pre 1816 the couple went to England as the first child was born there in 1816. Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: Mott, 1826, Granville Ferry

I have a copy of a letter dated August 15, 1826, written by Maryann Mott London at "Granville Ferry opposite Annapolis Royal" to her brother Edward London in New Brunswick. She is living with a Mr. Mott. Does anyone have information regarding a Mr. Mott living in the area at that time? We're wondering if perhaps Maryann was married to a Mr. Mott, hence the name Maryann MOTT London, although it's strange that she should still be using her London name and that she puts it last in her signature. Up until now we had thought her mother's name may have been Sarah Mott and that her parents gave the name Mott to Maryann and that Mr. Mott was her uncle. But perhaps her married name was Mott. Her father was John London (1782-1862) who came with his loyalist parents Ralph London and Anne Seamans to Saint John in 1783.

VIDITO Parker / CARTER Minetta / SIMMONS Levonia / SEAMONS Levonia

My wife's great grandfather was Parker VIDITO who was married to Minetta CARTER but in the records there is also a Parker VIDITO married to Levonia SIMMONS or SEAMONS. There is insufficient data to tell whether Parker was the husband of both Levonia and Minetta. The marriage record at the MacDonald Museum in Nova Scotia for Parker and Minetta yields the following information:

Parker VIDITO marries Minetta CARTER on May 8, 1886 in Bridgetown, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. Parker reports his age to be 34, that he is a widower, born in Nictaux Mt, with parents John and Ann. Minetta reports her age to be 36, that she is a spinster born in Dalhousie, with parents John and Rebecca. Thus, Parker was born in 1852, Minetta in 1850 and it is Parker's second marriage. The ceremony is presided over by Rev. N. H. SANIN, a Baptist minister with witnesses Lois HICKS and Wilson HICKS.

In the marriage record of Parker to Minetta he states that his parents were John and Ann, which I assume to be John VIDITO and Ann DALEY.

In the 1871 census for Nictaux, Annapolis County, NS that I reviewed at the Admiral Digby Museum it states that:

Parker VIDITO is age 35 and is married to Levonia SIMMONS, age 28. Calculating back this puts Parker's birth in 1836 and Levonias in 1843. Levonia was born in Hillsburgh and they were married on Jan 24 1864. At that time they had the following children:
Reuben born 1865
Erica born 1869
Bertha born 1871

On this same Census, Parker states that his parents are John and Ann.

Given that both Parkers state that their parents are John and Ann, and that I have found no other ancestors in the correct time frame except John VIDITO and Ann DALEY, it would seem that the two Parkers have the same parents and are the same person. I don't know how to explain the discrepancies in their birthdates of 1836 and 1852.

The crux of this surname input is then to determine if anyone has information on Parker VIDITO/ Levonia SIMMONS/ and Minetta CARTER that will establish that Parker was or was not the same person. For what its worth the data in Calnek's " Annapolis History", Alice Priest's, "John Vidito: a Huguenot Family", and the records I have from Dwight VIDITO do not satisfy this question.

I am curious about the name of Josiah Willoughby Anthony. The middle name is not terribly common and virtually all Willoughbys that I have found are descended from Augustus and Elizabeth Starr Willoughby, originally of Kings County. At some time the family, or perhaps the widow and children, moved to the Granville area and the daughters married into a number of Annapolis families (Longley, Fellows, Fullerton, etc.) Elizabeth died in 1837. Do you know if one of the Willoughby women married into the Anthony family?

Who was Thomas Handley Chipman's Mother-in-Law?

Thomas Handley CHIPMAN (1834-1928) married Mary Elizabeth TUPPER (1838-1906) in 1865 in Tupperville, Anna, NS. Their daughter, Laura, was my great-grandmother. I am having some difficulty with Mary Elizabeth's mother, and I'm hoping someone researching Annapolis County may be able to help me.

In Calnek and The Tupper Genealogy, she was Elizabeth Tupper, d/o Eliakim Tupper and Lydia Putnam of Stewiacke. Elizabeth first married William Tupper in 1823; he died 08 May 1827 leaving one daughter Maria, b. 1825, m. Barzillai Forsyth. Elizabeth returned to Stewiacke for a time, then returned to Annapolis County, where she married Elias Tupper (s/o Asa Tupper, b. 1799) 10 September 1828, and had daughter Mary Elizabeth on Nov. 27, 1832. William's will seems to confirm all this.

On the other hand, we have the Bert Chipman Genealogy, where Mary Elizabeth is described as the daughter of Elias and Mary (COOPER) Tupper, of Tupperville. My great grandmother did not correct this statement with her annotations in the book, so I believe she thought it was correct.

The LDS database, unhappily, has duplicate entries for each of Elias' children; once with Elizabeth Tupper as mother, and once with a Mary or Mary Cooper as mother. I read this to mean that there are two sets of birth records which refer to different mothers' names. I have found no other Coopers who could be candidates for another marriage for Elizabeth between William and Elias, and there wouldn't have been time anyways.

Can anyone shed light on this problem? Were there Coopers in the area, for example? I'm at a roadblock here, and would really appreciate some ideas.

Balcom(b)

I am looking for information on the descendants of John Balcomb and Catherine Lowe. I am well aware of Neil Balcom's site -- in fact, I have contributed to it. There are some loose ends I would like to pursue regarding John and Catherine's family, and here is what I have: John Balcomb, farmer, b. 12 Aug 1803 Clementsport NS, d. 24 Jul 1861 at 8:00 A.M. [s/o John Balcomb and Helen Gilmore]; m. 4 Jan 1827 Catherine Lowe at St. Lukes Anglican Church, Annapolis Royal; she was born 22 Sep 1806, d. 4 Sep 1852 [d/o Abraham Lowe and Phebe Ditmars]. An entry in The History of Digby County indicates that on 15 Mar 1830 John was a member of the First Clements Temperance Society. On 13 Jun 1855 John married Martha Porter ne Merritt b. about 1807 Clementsport (LDS) [d/o Enoch Merritt and Martha Anthony]. John and Martha were married at the home of J. A. Merritt of Granville in the presence of John G. Balcom, Nehemiah Merritt, and W. Merritt (recorded St. Clements certificate #108). After Johns death, a Letter of Assignment was filed 21 Aug 1861 by his widow, Martha, and his nephew, John G. Balcom. John not only died without a will, he died with many debts. It took a long time to develop a plan so that his heirs would each get a small strip of his land. There was a public auction of all of the household effects, right down to the sheets and food items. Each of the family members, including Martha and the younger children, had to buy their own plates and silverware back from the estate. Children born at Clementsport:

1. Hezekiah P. b. 15 Aug 1829 (twin of Phoebe), d. 28 May 1880; m. Elizabeth Rice (d/o Henry Allen Rice & Zebudah Rice? [see entry #13, Decendants of John Rice:widowmaker.com]).
