Q1
Date: 02 Jan 1998
From: Winifred K Miller
Subject: Early 1810 ? Colchester Marriage

Trying to find proof of a marriage of John Clark to Ruth Hamilton. Supposedly they came to Ontario Elgin County from Nova Scotia around 1817. If I have the correct John Clark, Ruth died and he remarried a Charlotte Mills. This Clark may be the son of John Clark from England. William and John Clark (brothers ) were in the Anapolis Area after 1775. There is a John Clark of Maudie that had three females in the family in a
census

Q3
Date: 07 Jan 1998
From: BillPontin
Subject: Gibson, Dalhousie, N.S.

Seeking information on William GIBSON, a disbanded soldier who in the early 1800s was given land in Dalhousie, Nova Scotia. Great grandmother Hester Thorne GIBSON, 1850-1906 was the d/o of Charles Edward GIBSON and Emily Cecelia DAKIN. I have a book, "Descendants of Thomas Dakin", and it lists Edward Gibson, born 14 Oct 1816 in Dalhousie, and son of William and Mary (O'BRIEN) GIBSON. W. Calnek's book, "History of the County of Annapolis" has a William Gibson listed as a disbanded soldier possibly of the Fencible Corps. He was deeded lot #10, 12 Jul 1817.

Can anyone tell me more about this William GIBSON is he the father of Charles and possibly my x3 great grandfather? In addition, where can I find information on the "Fencible Corps"?

Q6
Date: 12 Jan 1998
From: Winifred K Miller
Subject: Annapolis Area 1800-1825

Need an area around Annapolis that would have a William Clark and a John Lumley in the same place.( 1810 ?) Lumley was in mill work and brought his equipment with him around 1813 to Dunwich. Ont. In 1817 John Lumley has a grandson named William John Lumley in Dunwich. William Clark and John Lumley received land grants in Dunwich from Thomas Talbot. From 1822 Lot B and Lot A in Concourse 9 went in parts from William Clark and wife Mary, John Lumley to Joseph , John, Croglan Lumley and John, Jonah and Elijah Clark. Jonah Clark(NS)married a Lumley. John Clark married a Charlotte Mills !834, however I believe John was previously married perhaps several times. John Clark is listed as a father to Elijah Clark with a Ruth Hamilton as wife. William Clark from England had a brother John and also sons Robert, James, John, Thomas, Henry and Joseph by his second wife Mary James, daughter of Ann James, widow of Annapolis

Need to prove my great grandmother Rachel Clark b. Dunwich 1827sister of Elijah and a John Clark to link parents.

Q27
Date: 23 Feb 1998
From: Robert Booth Jr.
Subject: Fosters of Granville NS

Can anyone produce primary-source info about the first generation of the Foster family, settled in Granville, Annapolis County, by 1764? The brothers were Isaac (b. 1728?), Ezekiel (b.1730?), and Jeremiah (b.1745/6), the sisters were Mrs. Judith Chute (b. 1726?), Mrs. Elizabeth LeCain (b.1733?), Mrs Sarah Wheelock (b.1736?). Jeremiah returned to New Hampshire in 1767 and stayed there. The others stayed in Nova Scotia.

The parents are Benjamin Foster (he probably died before the family went to Nova Scotia from New Hampshire) and Sarh (Woodward) Foster, born in Glouceter, Essex Co., Mass., in 1704 and who, it is claimed, lived until 1805, dying at the age of 100-plus.

Does anyone have confirmation in the records of any facts relating to these people, their relatedness, and the date and place of the death of Mrs. Sarah Foster in 1805, land records, probates, etc.? Calnek-Savary's Historyof Annapolis County, along with Chute Genealogy and Pierce's Foster Genealogy all give info about these Fosters, but none offers sources or proof for their conclusions.

Subject: Josiah Dodge

I am related to the Dodge family (Dodge car fame, etc.) and a close friend is a direct descendant of Josiah Dodge who died on July 7, 1805 in Annapolis Royal Valley. His tombstone was discovered by my friend Vic Sifton's brother (direct descendants of Josiah Dodge) hidden away in some brambles. I recently heard that the property owner has cleaned up and fenced this site, and brought these facts to your local historical-genealogy group. We would greatly appreciate knowing where Josiah Dodge came from in England. Legend has it that he was military and was 'dropped-off' near Annapolis Royal to prepare maps of the area. Have you ever heard of this man? Would his obit. give his English roots? We know his descendants, but not the locality he came from in England. Can anyone help?

I am from Florida and am going to be visiting Halifax, Yarmouth and New Tusket in June for a few days and I want to try to locate where she lived so I can take pictures back to my family. I have never been to NS before and am very unfamiliar with it. Also, because I live so far away, I will not be able to make additional trips to follow up on research

He arrived with the ships list, having him as Sambo Cromwell, but seems to disappear after this. Later there is a Cromwell family, in Southville, his name Jospeh Cromwell. We assume he changed their first names. Can anyone help me with this search, with some direction to go in. I've read several books on the history of Loyalist NS, and only found 1 clue. A Joseph Cromwell applied for a land grant of 50 acres in Clements Township, (don't know where that is), but it dosn't show him as receiving it.

From: Thom Danicki
Subject: Annapolis Co. querry

My wife's gr-gr-grandparents were Anderson HEALY & Mary DELLIMER, both of whom I believe were born in Ireland (probably orangemen). They were married in All Saints Anglican church in Granville, Annapolis Co., on 15 Dec. 1842. We know of six children they had, each of whom were born in Granville & christened at All Saints:

John Henry (17 Jan. 1844)
Isaac William (4 Mar. 1845)
Ebenezer (10 Nov. 1846)
Dawson Dellimer (18 Nov. 1848)
James Comfort (18 Sept. 1850) &
Percilla/Priscilla Scoales (29 Aug. 1852)

We know that Percilla/Priscilla moved to Centerville, Ontario at some point, and there married William Henry Reid on 5 Feb. 1878. We don't know if the whole family moved to Centerville or not, and we have no further information about any of them other than Percilla. We do know that there was another family of Healys in Annapolis Co., and suspect they were related:

Isaac William Healy married Amelia Augustus King (or Keans) on 11 Dec.1834. They had the following 8 children:

John Henry (29 Jan. 1836)
Joseph Comfort (30 Nov. 1836?)
William Cosswell (14 Sept. 1839)
Anderson (22 Sept. 1841)
Theron Potter (14 May 1844)
Elenora Erena (11 June 1846)
Charles (14 May 1849) &
Granville (19 Dec. 1851)

Priscilla Scoales Healy & William Henry Reid had 5 children in Ontario between 1878 & 1885, then moved on to Lapeer Co., Michigan where another daughter was born in 1896.

Do any of these names sound familiar to anyone??

I have recently learned that Charles Johnson (born 1802, Digby, son of William & Hannah Pantine Johnson) was alive and living in 1862 in Granville, Annapolis County, NS, a "gentleman". At that time he was selling his mining rights on Digby Neck. Before 1833 he had m'd (probably in Digby) Charlotte _______. They moved from Digby Neck in 1833 to Wilmot. I don't know what they were doing between 1835 (in Wilmot) and 1862 (Charles in Granville). They had at least a daughter Elizabeth, born c. 1832, who m. 1857 Morton Foster. The 1861 Annapolis County census does not list Granville nor does the 1871 census--is this because Granville info has been lost, or because Granville was then listed under other designations? Subject: MOSSMAN of Annapolis

The 29th Jan 1823 issue of the Acadian Recorder reported the death of Mrs Martha MOSSMAN, on 5 Jan 1823 and named her husband as ANDREW.

I believe this is my g.g.g.grandparents. All I know of them is that Andrew was a member of th 2nd Batt'n Royal Reg't and sent to Nfld sometime prior to 1800. The marriage, in 1804, of their daughter, Harriet, is recorded in the Anglican Cathedral, St John's to a David PIGOT also of the same regiment. Harriet & David PIGOT went to PEI to live about 1832. It would appear Harriet's parents went to Annapolis after leaving the Army.

I believe this Andrew & Martha MOSSMAN are unrelatred to the Lunenburg MOSSMANS who emigrated about 1750. Does anyone have any further information about this MOSSMAN family?? Any help and/or direction would be much appreciated.

Subject: MOSSMAN - Annapolis

I am new to the list and this is my first posting. I have many connections to Nova Scotia but the MOSSMAN family of Annapolis is my current 'blank wall.'.

Found that a Mrs Martha MOSSMAN b, 1757 (NS&-7) and died 1823 (NS&-7), wife of Andrew Mossman. (I'm not sure what the 'NS&-7' means). The South Shore Genealogical Society were quite helpful - they claim she is buried somewhere in Annapolis and that she died Jan 5th 1823. Her Obituary was written up in the Acadian Recorder, 1 Feb 1823.

This Andrew and Martha MOSSMAN were my g.g.g.grandparents. Andrew served in Nfld as a member of the 2nd Batt'n Royal Reg't of Artillery from about 1790 to ?. Has anyone access to this obituary?? I would be interested in further details that it might contain. Would love to contact anyone connected to this Mossman family,

It would appear that this family is quite seperate from the Swiss Mossmans who came to NS in 1750s.

Can anyone give me some help and/or direction for tracing disbanded soldiers who settled Annapolis area in the early 1800s.??

My query is re: Andrew MOSSMAN, who served with the 2nd Batt'n Royal Reg't of Artillery. He came over from England to Nfld about 1790 and probably also served in Nova Scotia, too.

He must have been living at Annapolis when his wife, Martha died there 5 Jan 1823. This info from the Acadian Recorder of Feb 1, 1823.

Subject: Annapolis & King Co. searches

Having not posted my list last year when all others did, I thought I'd do it now. These people are all from Annapolis and Kings Counties. All were born between 1743 and 1776.

Brown - I have a pretty extensive list of Brown's from Annapolis - the original 1764 grantees - I have the lines of Andrew, Joseph and Thomas in Annapolis and John of Kings Co. I am looking for Andrew - he was of Scottish ancestry from Massachusetts who married first to Unis Ryder or Rice and second to Amy Taylor.

Marshall - descendents of Solomon and wife Hannah Kendall

Heaton - looking for the origins of John Heaton who married Lydia

Hardy. Their children dropped the H's and became Eatons. I have files on the NS Hardy's.

Foster - descendents of John Foster and Elizabeth Ricketson.

Benedict - Jabez and Mary Weeks

Woodbury - Isaac and Hannah Clarke - who was she? who were her parents?

Marchant - William and Elizabeth Williamson. She is also descended from
Burbidge in Yarmouth.

Subject: the Mariner SLOCUM and family

I have a Charlotte A. SLOCUM in my line, from Annapolis Valley NS. She married a Joshua B. RAY (mid 1870s?) and moved to MA before 1881.

A couple questions about the SLOCUM family...

1. That spectre "family tradition" says Charlotte was closely related to the Mariner Joshua Slocum (it said she was his daughter, but that just can be, as she would have been born about the same time he was), BUT (i'm on a limb here, but why not, eh?) could she have been a sister? So does anybody happen to have handy anything which has Joshua's family in it (the book about him has been indefinetly checked out of my library, so i cant check it :(

2. Calnek and other sources all say the Slocums were loyalist desendant from Anthony Slocum of Taunton MA. thru Ebenezer Slocum, U.E.L. of Rhode Island, but this (unsubstaniated) claim bothers me... first of all the U.E.L. Slocums were in N.B according to their deposition in the court papers, and how many SLOCUM families were there in Nova Scotia? I would think more then one, it is a pretty big island, and their were lots of loyalists?

Anyway... this is kinda rambling, but it just represents me getting off some steam about a current dead end in my tree.

BTW - are their any desendents of the Afro-American Loyalists on this list? I know most of them went to Sierra Leone in search of true freedom, but some stayed. I'm not related to them (at least i dont think i am), i just think it's a fascinating story.

Subject: Annapolis Valley WHITMANS

Some thirty years ago a Charles __ Whitman of NS privately printed a book titled approx. "The Whitmans of the Annapolis Valley and their Descendants", listing descendants of (Deacon) John WHITMAN (arrived NS 1760 from MA on "Charming Molly"). His book also contains extensive excerpts from the old Farnham John WHITMAN of Weymouth genealogy published by Tuttle in New Haven. Through mischance I lost my copy, together with all of my notes.

Whitman found my critical link in MA early in this century (Frederick Augustus WHITMAN b. 1848-1855, NS - possibly Liverpool or Milton - emigrated to MA before 1900.)

I've lurked here for a while, and scoured the archives and Chignecto site. I've found fascinating Whitman data, but no connection. It would be enormously helpful to locate a copy of the Charles Whitman book or access someone familiar with his research. Thus this, my maiden post and request for help.

From: George Levoy
Subject: surnames, SAUNDERS, GIDNEY, BEALS

I am looking for death and other information about Lorenzo SAUNDERS who is my paternal great grandfather. The information I have about him is limited and shown below.

01.He was born about 1860, likely in Annapolis County (Bridgetown) or Digby County (Sandy Cove), both in Nova Scotia.

02. On or about November 26, 1860, he married Catherine/Kate GIDNEY in maybe Bridgetown, maybe Sandy Cove. (Catherine/Kate born October 6, 1839, is a daughter of Angus Morrison Gidney and Experience Ann BEALS OF Bridgetown).

03.Their first child, Allice, was born in Sandy Cove, 1861, and died in Sandy Cove at age 14 in 1875. All children names are Allice, Agnes, William, Bertha, Harleigh/Harley, Roland, Alice and Clarissa/Clarace (Clara). Clara is my paternal grandmother and died May 1, 1920 of consumption (TB) in Franklin, NH.

04. Their last child (8th of 8), Clara, was born September 20, 1879 in Sandy Cove.

05. Lorenzo died at age 39. He is shown in the 1871 Census but not in the 1881 Census. Catherine is shown in the 1881 Census as "female farmer". Lorenzo may have died at sea since he is shown in the 1871 Census as a fisherman. Diseases of the time are not known. Lorenzo is not listed in the cemetery listings of Digby County. The family was all Baptists.

06. In 1884, Catherine and children (all or some) migrated from Sandy Cove to Laconia, NH. The children ranged in age from 5 to 20 years. The "20" is based on Allice dying in 1875.

07. "Mrs. Lorenzo Saunders" is shown on Page 172 of Mary Kate Bull's book "Sandy Cove--the History of a Nova Scotia Village", Copyright 1978.

08. Catherine lived in Laconia, NH until her death December 25, 1917.

I would also like to find Allice.
