Caballo Lake

Caballo Lake State Park

This state park in a recreation area which was developed after the construction of Caballo Dam in 1937-38. Caballo Dam is a secondary storage reservoir on the Rio Grande eleven miles south of Elephant Butte Lake. It was built to re-impound water released from Elephant Butte Lake. An elaborate system of flumes, siphons, and several hundred miles of main canals supplement the main dams and provide irrigation for the Rincon Valley, Mesilla Valley, and the El Paso Valley to the south of New Mexico
