AGUILAR
Am seeking information from anyone in the following counties. Colfax, Mora,
Harding, Union, and Taos counties. I'm searching for a baptism and marriage
record for JOSE EULOGIO AGUILAR. Born approximately in 1854. He married Maria
Gracia Leyba in approximately 1879.Maria Gracia Leyba was baptized in Penasco in
1857. All I know is that g-grandma Graica Leyba went to Trinidad, Colorado as a
housekeeper for her brothers and met JOSE EULOGIO AGUILAR and they married and
moved back to Ojo Sarco, New Mexico in the Penasco, Taos County, New Mexico
area.
They baptized their children in the San Antonio Church, Penasco, Taos, County,
New Mexico. I have already searched the Picuris, Penasco New Mexico, and
Trinidad, Colorado LDS baptism and marriage records and have not found either a
baptism or marriage record. Any help will be appreciated. I also heard that JOSE
EULOGIO AGUILAR may have been a Presbyterian, however I believe that he was
probably baptized Catholic and doubtful that they married in the Presbyterian
faith since Maria Gracia Leyba was Catholic and their children were baptized and
raised Catholic. Please email to: email Thank you.
Chavez / Rayetas
We are looking for information on the family of Rayetas, the wife of David
Chavez of Chico Springs, Colfax County, NM. As of the
1900 census Rayetas was no longer alive. Different lines of this family were
known to have moved to Mora county, Socorro County, and even into Colorado. Some
of Rayetas' family members died at young adult ages, and were known to suffer
from severe headaches. I was told one of Rayetas' daughters, Tomasa Chavez died
in 1920 at the age of 22. Rayetas was dead by the age of 27. We do not have a
surname for Rayetas, nor have any idea if any other family members suffered from
severe headaches or brain tumors. It may be a genetic condition. Please contact
Clarissa at [email protected] and/or Tom at
[email protected] if you have any
information to help track the family lines in question. Thanks!

FITZWATER / MESSICK / MUSICK / CLARK
I am looking for information on the following families in Quay County: Fletcher,
Fitzwater, and possibly Messick or Musick, as well as Clark. These families had
land patents during the early part of the century. William H. Fletcher and his
son, Manson H. Fletcher, received these patents in 1915. Manson was my
grandfather. He married a Bertha Fitzwater--my grandmother, in 1918. There only
child, my father, was Charles Fletcher. William H. Fletcher married Martha
Messick (or Musick, or Music) in Coffee County, Tennessee and had eleven
children there. They moved west around the turn of the century--1900. I do not
know why they would have moved so relatively late in life and from a more
fertile land to the semi-arid land. The homesteads were eight miles north of
Endee. Endee is on I-40 (it has its own exit) and bout 3 miles from the Texas
border. Any help would be appreciated.

I am need help, as I have reach an impasse in my research. I am looking for the
Marriage records and Birth records of my Great-great grandparents. I have only
found one record of them existing and it is in the 1900 census of Spinger,
Colfax co. There Names were Manuel GONZALES and Juana SANCHEZ here is the
information I gathered via the census... Manuel GONZALES (b.1852 NM) and Juana
SANCHEZ (b. 1855 NM) and married possibly in 1882 (my great-great grandparents)
they appear in the 1900 NM
census Colfax Co., Springer, NM. They had 5 children listed in the census and 3
others that I know of: Felicitas b. 1879 Colorado Vincente b. 1882 Colorado
Gabriel Jose b. 1885 Springer, NM. Eutimia b. 1891 Patrocinia b. ? Mitilde ?
Lucadio ? Family Stories put them in a few different places Springer of course,
Maxwell, Wagonmound, and Las Vegas. My own grandfather was raised by Juana in
Las Vegas around the early 1920's. He passed away in 1973 so he is unavailable
for questioning. Also Manuel was thought to have passed in the early 1900's I
have been able to find a Manuel Gonzales b. 1851 in Pecos, Rio Arriba that looks
like a good Candidate and a friend in Las Vegas sent me another possible
candidate (Gonzales, Jose Manuel bap.2 Dec. 1850.) from Las Vegas. I got an
email from a lady who told me Springer's Church had burned down and all the
records destroyed and the graveyard had been destroyed by a flood in the early
1920's. Here is my question where do I go from here?? Any help would be greatly
Appreciated. Thank You, Carolina

JOHNSON / JOHNSTON / DALE / CONLEY / BETTON / Le PLATS / DURANDS
My great, great grandfather, John E. JOHNSON/JOHNSTON, was born in 1821 and
immigrated from Durham County England with his family to Blossburg, New Mexico
in 1870's or 1880's. He was a mine foreman for the Raton Coal and Coke Company
at Blossburg. And I think the mural in Shuler Theatre depicting the mining
operation is possibly either my great great grandfather, John E. Johnson,or his
son William Johnson.
John E. Johnson shot himself on a Saturday, in July 1895 according to an article
in the Raton Register, and he is buried in Raton. No record has been found but
the possibility is that he is buried in Fairmont cemetery along with his son in
law George DALE, husband of Susan Johnson Dale. Newspapers of Raton mention his
involvement in the community when Blossburg was thriving and coal was king. His
daughters and husbands also were part of Blossburg.
1. Susan (Johnson) and George DALE are my great grandparents. George who died
tragically at age 41, supposedly hit by a train near Sophris or Piedmont,
Colorado. He is also buried in unknown and unmarked grave in Raton. He played
the flute inThe Raton Dance Band. I believe his picture is in the book titled
Ghost Towns and Mining Camps of New Mexico.
2. William and Isabella (Conley) JOHNSON
3. Grace (Johnson) and James CONLEY
4. Mary Ellen (Johnson) and William BETTON. I believe that other sons of John
and Isabella JOHNSON , also lived either at Blossburg or Raton at some point and
descendents may still be in New Mexico. His sons were Joseph, Robert, James and
John. Other surnames associated with my JOHNSON and DALE lines who lived and
worked in New Mexico before the 1900's were LePlats and Durands. There are5th,
6th and 7th generation of these ancestors still living near Trinidad, Colorado.
My roots and my memories are etched in the history of Colfax County and the town
of Raton and surrounding area. Nadine

MONDRAGON
I'm looking for records of the parents of and the baptism/christening record for
Bernardo Mondragon, born February 2 or 21, 1869, probably in Mora County. I
believe his mother was Guadalupe Mondragon, born about 1846 in Santa Fe County.
I have no idea what her husband's name was or who he was. Any information or
suggestion would be appreciated. Guadalupe Mondragon is listed in the 1860 U.S.
Census. (See census sheet for Santa Gertrudes, Mora County, NM - Page No. 347 -
recorded August 6, 1860 ( Ancestry.com Image No. 117.) Her age was given as 12
years old, and she was living in the household of her parents, Pedro Mondragon
and Maria Rosalia Castellano. Guadalupe Mondragon is listed in the 1870 U.S.
Census. (See census sheet for 1st Precinct, Mora, Mora County, NM - Page No.
301a - recorded July 23, 1870 / Ancestry.com Image No. 1.) Her age was given as
24 years old. She was still living in her parents' household. However, she
apparently had the following five children between 1860 and 1870: Francisca
Mondragon, age 7;
Juanota Mondragon, age 6;
Catalina Mondragon, age 5;
Macedonia Mondragon, age 4; and
Bernardo Mondragon, age 3.
Neither the 1860 nor the 1870 censuses show any men in Pedro Mondragon's
household who appear to be Guadalupe Mondragon's husband or the father of her
five children. I have yet to find Guadalupe Mondragon and her children in the
1880 U.S. Census, but they are no longer in her father's household. Guadalupe
Mondragon had at least one other child, Raymundo Mondragon. The only records of
a Raymundo Mondragon that I have found are: an LDS International Genealogical
Index record of a marriage between a Raymundo Mondragon and a Moclovita Garcia
on June 10, 1892 at Immaculate Conception Church in Las Vegas, San Miguel
County, NM; and a 1900 U.S. Census listing of Raymundo Mondragon, born July
1876, living in Las Vegas, San Miguel County, NM, and married to Flore
Mondragon. These Raymundo Mondragons may not be my Guadalupe Mondragon's son,
but their ages and general locations near Mora make them likely her son.

ORTEGA
Looking for the connection, if any, of Manuel Ortega who was one of the 76
citizens requesting in 1817 the establishment of a church in Mora, to José
Guadalupe Ortega who received land in the Mora under the Mexican Land Grant of
1835; and if Juan de Jesús Ortega is a descendant of either one or both of these
early settlers of Mora County. Juan de Jesús Ortega was born about 1825, married
María de la Luz Rodarte in about 1839, and was residing in the Golondrinas
precinct of that county for the 1860 census: Juan Ortega, 35; María Luz Rodarte,
32; Simón Ortega, 15; Manuel Ortega, 10; Carmel Ortega, 8; Trinidad Ortega, 6.
Other children were: María Eleuteria (1856-1859), Juanita who was born in San
Antonio de Arriba in 1859, and likely Juan A. Ortega born about 1840 and who was
living in Lower Rociada, San Miguel Co., in 1900. Please note that there were
two persons of the same name --- Juan de Jesús Ortega ---- born in 1819 and 1820
in Chimayó but with no apparent connection to the one living in Mora County.
María de la Luz Rodarte was the daughter of Joaquín Rodarte and María de la O
Mestas. This family was in San Juan in 1816, El Valle de San Antonio (Mora) in
1845, and in Rincón de Tecolote (San Miguel) in 1853. Joaquín Rodarte's father,

CARRILLO
Jose CARRILLO was born 21 August 1833 in Valencia County, New Mexico
(probably in Manzano). He died date unknown on the Mescalero Apache
Reservation in Otero County. Family history had it that he left his wife for an
Apache woman. I'm wondering what became of him in his later years. The only
clues I have are these:
In the 1880 Census, Jose was living with his wife, Nicanora MARQUEZ in the city
of Lincoln in Lincoln County, New Mexico. Living with them were their children
Mariano, Teresa, Juana, Beatrice, and Birjinia. An older child, Doroteo, was
already married and living on his own in Lincoln by then.
In the 1900 Census, there is a Jose CORRILLA (color: Mex, age: 59) living on the
Mescalero Apache Reservation with his wife Charlie (age 44), children John (age
20), Beatrice (18), Juanita (16), Guadalupe (13), Mary (10), Anita (5), and
Genita (2).
In Eve Ball's book, Indeh, she has a brief biography of a Jose CARILLO based on
interviews with those who knew him. There's a slight variation in the spelling
of his name, and a big variation in his life story, compared to the Jose
CARRILLO I'm researching. I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could tell me if
I'm on the right track or what other resources to search in order to solve this
mystery. Thank you very much. Annette

Johnson, or his
son William Johnson.
He played
the flute in the Raton Dance Band. I believe his picture is in the book titled
Ghost Towns and Mining Camps of New Mexico.
2. William and Isabella (Conley) JOHNSON
3. Grace (Johnson) and James CONLEY
4. Mary Ellen (Johnson) and William BETTON. I believe that other sons of John
and Isabella JOHNSON , also lived either at Blossburg or Raton at some point and
descendents may still be in New Mexico. His sons were Joseph, Robert, James and
John. Other surnames associated with my JOHNSON and DALE lines who lived and
worked in New Mexico before the 1900's were LePlats and Durands. There are 5th,
6th and 7th generation of these ancestors still living near Trinidad, Colorado.
My roots and my memories are etched in the history of Colfax County and the town
of Raton and surrounding area.

ROMERO
I am seeking any information on a famous NM pastore of the 1800's named Casimero
Romero. He was born in 1833 and his family settled in Mora county. In 1876 he
traveled to Texas and established what became known as Tascosa. His wife was
named Salome and they adopted his nephew and niece - Piedad and José Ynocencio
(Chencho). In 1896, Casimero move to Bard, NM where he continued sheep ranching
until he died in 1912. I believe that my aunt is either the daughter or
granddaughter of José and am trying to verify or disprove this. Any help either
genealogical or historical would be greatly appreciated.

granchildren on the female side are descendants of the Pueblo Indians of Abique
and have Indian blood in their veins." I take this to mean that Maria dela Luz's
mother was an Abiquiu Indian. Which would confirm that the Maria dela Luz Martin
that I found is not the same as the wife of Ramon Lopez since that Maria dela
Luz is of spanish descendant tracing back through the Santistevan families.
I have not been able to find a definite baptism for Jose Ramon Lopez - the one I
did find married someone else! And I have not been able to find a marriage for
Jose Ramon and Maria dela Luz Martin. According to census reports - Maria dela
Luz would have been born ca 1786-1788. Other baptisms for Maria dela Luz
Martin: d/ Jose Martin and Josefa Romero (Spanish) 29 Jul 1772 Maria Luysa, d/
Juan Domingo (n.s.) and Ygnacia Martin (Indian del Pueblo) 14 Mar 1776; Maria
dela Luz, d/ Jose Martin and Barbara Espinosa de color quebrado of this mission
- 27 Sep 1776; Maria dela Luz, d/ Juan Miguel Martin and Ma Concepcion Martin,
vesino of this jurisdiction, 11 Sep 1785; Maria dela Luz, d/ Manuel Anto Martin
and Ma Ygnacia Sandoval, vesina, 19 Apr 1788. The rest were born after
1790. Nancy A. email

MARQUEZ / VASQUEZ / VELASQUEZ
I am trying to find any information on my maternal Great Grandparents who,
as far as I know were born, raised, married and died in El Rito, Rio Arriba
County. All I really know is that their names were Maximo Marquez and Marcelina
Vasquez(possibly Velasquez). I believe they may have died between 1910-1920. I
do not have any information on their parents or grandparents. They had two
children, my Grandfather, Jose Tomas Marquez, born in 1907 and who died in
1989. His younger sister is still alive and I'm hoping to get more information
from her. I do know that they were orphans who lived with relatives. My
Grandfather's wife, who is still living, was an Ortiz also from the area. Any
information would be greatly appreciated!

MARQUEZ / VASQUEZ
My great grandparents are Maximo Marquez and his wife Marcelina Vasquez. I have
some new information to add to my previous query. Marcelina had two sisters, Ana
Maria, whose first husband was HERRERA and whose second husband was QUINTANA.
Her other sister was named Gavinita (sp?), married to a LOPEZ who had several
children, Julian, Domidilio (sp?), Maclovio and Eutemio (sp?). All three ladies
were Native American from an unknown pueblo/reservation. My GGrandfather,
Maximo's parents are: Antonio Marquez and Ines Marquez, his siblings are:
Candido, Jesus, Silviana, and Piedad. I would like to find out Ines' maiden
name, and her parent's names. I'd also like to find out who Marcelina's parents
were and which pueblo or reservation they were from. Does anyone have any
suggestions on where to find out information on the pueblos or reservations of
northern NM? I don't know if they conducted the census on reservations and if
so, what years. I also don't know where to locate those records if they are, in
fact, available. Thank you for your help!

MERRILL / WATERFIELD / MCDONALD / JACKSON
According to my husbands mother, his Grandmother Alta (Merrill) Jackson was the
daughter of Nellie Waterfield who lived with her
husband Elgie (sp) Merril on their homestead just east of the Plains cemetery
approx 5 miles east of Forrest. According to the family Merrill
died and Nellie REMARRIED to Jimmy McDonald. All sources I have seen claim the
McDonald was her first and only husband but she was definitely my husbands great
grandmother and his grandmothers maiden name was Merrill...also, McDonald lived
until the 1960s and did not die until way past the 1920s dates shown on other
records...problem is I cant find out any info on Elgie Merrill at ALL!!
Supposedly, the homestead Nellie lived on with McDonald belonged to Merrill to
begin with...any one out there that can help? Thanks, Laurie McClung

TRUJILLO / LOPEZ
My Great Grandfather is named Lucas de Jesus Trujillo from El Rito, New Mexico.
He married a Maria Manuela de Lura (sp?) Lopez who I believe was from El Rito
(according to the 1880 census which indicates that she was also 30 and so would
have been born in 1850) He was born in March, 1840 according to the census. One
record that I found states that she was born in May,1843 in El Rito but there is
also a Maria Manuela Lopez from Vallecitos born in 1844 so I'm not sure if they
might not be one in the same and there was a mistake somewhere along the way. In
any case, Lucas Trujillo and Maria M Lopez were married in 1858 in El Rito. I'd
like to find out when they passed away, who their parents were and in Maria's
case...where they were from.
Does anyone have any info on this branch of my family? I'd appreciate your help!
