FITZPATRICK / MAYER / PEAKER /
I am looking for information about a man named Fred Mayer. Fred Mayer lived in
Lincoln County between 1894 and 1896. Fred Mayer was the main prosecution
witness in the trial of the murderers of my great grandfather George
Fitzpatrick. George Fitzpatrick was shot to death by Robert Forsythe, George
Fitzpatrick's brother in law. Oliver Peaker was charged as an accessory to
murder. Oliver Peaker later married the widow of George Fitzpatrick. Fred Mayer
was present when Robert Forsythe and Oliver Peaker shot George Fitzpatrick
outside White Oaks, New Mexico in 1894. From what I can tell from court
documents, Fred Mayer gave statements that would have sent Forsythe and Peaker
to the gallows. However, come the time of trial, Fred Mayer could not be found.
I am wondering if he skipped town or whether a friend or relative of Robert
Forsythe and Oliver Peaker caused him to disappear. I am hoping that someone
knows something about Fred Mayer or perhaps may be able to find him on the 1900
Census. Sincerely Yours Iginio Fitzpatrick

RICHARDSON Family Photographs
I've "rescued" a group of photographs including many belonging to the
RICHARDSON Family. The first is a photograph of "Grandma RICHARDSON"
which
was taken in Lampasas, Texas sometime between 1908-1912. The lady in the
photograph appears to be in her 70's at the time it was taken. The second
photograph is also identified as "Grandma RICHARDSON" and was taken in
front
of a house in Waco, TX sometime before 1908 and notes the address as 1026
N.
18th Street or 1102 N. 18th Street referring to a change in addresses that
the City of Waco made after the family moved to Waco.
The third photograph is of Mary, Hugh, and John RICHARDSON taken in 1869
and
addressed to Cousin Lizzie on April 29, 1869. There is no studio location
noted on this photograph, however, the three appear to be siblings ranging
in age from 6-15 years. The fourth is also a photograph of Mary, Hugh,
and
John RICHARDSON, taken in March 1885 at the Maxwell's Studio in Mt. Ayr,
Iowa. The three appear to be in their 20's and 30's at the time this
photograph was taken.
The fifth photograph is of a group of 6 young men with one identified as
"Uncle Hugh", the same Hugh RICHARDSON which appears in the other
photographs. This photograph was taken at the James Studio in Iowa City,
IA, probably sometime in the 1880's with Hugh appearing to be in his 20's
at
the time.
The sixth photograph is of J.H. RICHARDSON and was taken at the Maxwell
Studio in Mt. Ayr, IA and is dated 1886. I believe this is the same man
previously identified as John RICHARDSON in earlier photographs. He
appears
to be in his 30's or 40's at the time the photograph was taken. Another
unidentified photograph from the Shroyer & Barnhart Studio in Mt. Ayr, IA
appears to be an earlier photograph of "Grandma RICHARDSON", probably
taken
in the 1870's or 1880's with the subject appearing to be in her 50's at
the
time.
Three additional photographs are all of Sidney A. KEYES identified as
Grandma RICHARDSON's brother. These are photographs taken at studios in
Michigan and Iowa. Three additional photographs are taken in the H.B.
Rice
Studio which I believe was in DeWitt, Nebraska and are identified as
"Mama"
and Aunt Kate MILLER. An additional unidentified photograph with no
location appears to be another photograph of the woman identified as
"Mama".
I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful group
of treasures can be returned to the family. If you are a member of this
RICHARDSON Family or know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,

him as single, white, age 30 born Scotland. If anyone can guide me to a source

SHERMAN
He Who Also Served, yet remains an UNSOLVED MYSTERY!
Will the Other Marshal Sherman, please Stand Up
by Art Cohan (ArtCohan@aol.com) The
mystery of the parentage of Marshall SHERMAN, Medal of Honor winner, is
delineated elsewhere in this issue. John E. SHERMAN, Jr. was the United States
District Marshal in the area covering Lincoln Co., NM during the Lincoln County
Wars . He became a friend of Billy the Kid, and a smattering of books about
Billy and the Lincoln County Wars (1878-1879) serve brief mention of Marshal
John Sherman, yet reveal nothing personal about the man. He is described in
numerous accounts as the "only honest man in the affairs of that time/place
– as corruption at every level of authority was rampant (to the Governor of
the Territory). Marshal Sherman attempted to bring a ring of justice to the
area. A trip to the Website of the U. S. Marshal Service was unhelpful – a
personal phone call to their historian was unhelpful – a search of the census
films of NM was unhelpful – review of many newspapers from that time/place was
unhelpful - and obtaining copies of the few items on file at the National
Archives revealed only his middle initial, the Jr. after his name, that he was
of Santa Fe and that he applied for re-appointment in March of 1880. Janelle
Foster corresponded with me quite a bit, and was very helpful with possible
areas to check, but all proved fruitless. If YOU, or anyone, have any
information about Marshal John E. Sherman, please write me! ArtCohan@aol.com

Jicarilla Cemetery
Approximately two years ago some hunters camped on the east side of Jicarilla
Cemetery. They used the old wooden markers for fire wood. I have been taking
care of the cemetery, usually on Easter Day. I've since been trying to find out
where and who was buried t here so I can relocate their head stones or markers.
I have been doing this with my own time and money so any help you can give would
greatly help. This is one of the oldest cemeteries in Lincoln County. At least
one Indian is buried there. For many years an unknown person would come to the
cemetery every year and place an Indian Medicine Bag with leather lash on one of
the markers. The medicine bag contained stones, beads and plant leaves. The
Indian grave marker was carved from a slab from a Pinon's tree. Thank You Silver

Thanks,

SANDOVAL
Am assisting a descendent of David Sandoval, born in Gallup New Mexico in 1909
or 1911. He told his daughter (above mentioned descendant) that he was a
descendant of the great Chirokowa Chief Geronimo.Has anyone done a Genealogical
study of this great Native American and his descendants, that I could check to
see if the father's claim is true? Would appreciate any help you can give us.
