EWART

Jacob Ewart owned a farm in the former Minersville area of what's
now Pittsburgh, almost in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh.  Part of
the property outline still remains, now called Ewart Street. His son
Sam moved closer to the city, in the Middle Hill section.  Sam's property,
called Linwood, was fronted by Center and Reed streets.  His next door
neighbor was Judge Alexander Brackenridge.  The rear property line of
Brackenridge and Ewart is now Brackenridge Street.

The grocery business was headquartered in the Ewart Building on
Liberty Avenue, downtown Pittsburgh.  I recall reading a reference that
circa 1925 the building was sold.  It was rehabbed several years ago.

I copied every marker then matched family units.
I believe my matches are correct although there are some assumptions and
possibilities.

The monument and statue were placed in the lot during 1887.  A small
inscription at the base reads "N. E. Granite, Hartford, CT.  This is
the New England Granite Company.  My research suggests the sculptor may
have been Conrad (aka Carl) Conrads.

Margaret Ross Ewart:  February 5, 1835 - December 26, 1916

 George probably was Jacob's son.

Samuel Ewart:  July 28, 1835 - November 22, 1915
Mary Brackenridge Ewart:  1832 - 1910.
 Samuel probably was Jacob's son.

Frederick C. Ewart: January 18, 1865 - June 12, 1951
Mary Kirkpatrick Ewart:  June 1, 1873 - May 5, 1951
 He was Sam's son.  No children mentioned in his obit.

William McKibbin Ewart:  June 1, 1873 - January 3, 1938
Alice Dicken Ewart:  January 5, 1873 - January 23, 1942
 He was the son of Sam and Mary Ewart

Samuel D. Ewart:  January 26, 1898 -  March 6, 1959
 Son of William McK. Ewart.
 Headstone includes "Husband of Mary Ege."
 He was the last marker in the Ewart lot.

Mary Ege Ewart: March 10, 1898 - November 15, 1992
 She was cremated and the "cremains" were buried to the right of her
 husband in 1993.

Jeannette Fraser Ewart:  January 26, 1898 - January 20, 1919
 She and Sam were twins.

Henry B. Ewart:  July 1, 1861 - April 23, 1862
Mary Ewart:  April 24, 1863 - January 1, 1869
Alice L. Ewart:  November 6, 1868 - January 2, 1870
 Probably children of Sam and Mary Brackenridge Ewart.  Children of
 George and Margaret Ewart is a possibility.  Henry B. most likely is
 Henry Brackenridge Ewart.

Cornelia Ewart Van Osten:  April 5, 1867 - November 23, 1943
Frederick William Van Osten, Jr.; July 12. 1867 - September 29, 1908
Gertrude Bandy nee Van Osten: March 10, 1893 - December 1, 1917
 Cornelia probably was Sam and Mary Brackenridge's daughter  Mary's eldest
 sister was Cornelia.

Dr. Charles R. Ewart:  November 23, 1854 - December 10, 1898
Samuel F. Ewart:  December 30, 1857 - April 15, 1923
 Possibly George and Mary's sons.

Grocery Executive F. C. Ewart Dies
Member of Prominent Pittsburgh Family

Funeral services for Frederick C. Ewart, retired grocery executive and
member of a prominent Pittsburgh family, will be at 11 a. m. tomorrow
in H. Sampson's Funeral Home.  Mr. Ewart, 86, died yesterday in the home
of a nephew Samuel D. Ewart, 6516 Forbes St., with whom he had lived since
the death of his wife five week ago.

Retired 20 Years

He retired about 20 years ago as president of the S. Ewart Co., wholesale
grocery firm.

He was the son of Samuel and Mary Brackenridge Ewart and the
great-grandson of Hugh Henry Brackenridge, first justice of the
Pennsylvania Supreme Court and founder of the Western Reserve University
of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Ewart was a graduate of WUP, now the University of Pittsburgh.

Lived on Coast
--------------
Since his retirement, he had lived in Pasadena, Cal., and Evanston, Ill.
Mr. Ewart was a former president of the board of the First Presbyterian
Church here.

He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Duquesne Club,
Allegheny Country Club, and the Glen View Club of Evanston.

S. D. Ewart, Horne Store Manager, Dies
Pioneer's Descendant In Charge of Branch In Natrona Heights

Samuel Dicken Ewart, 61, general manager of the Joseph Horne Co.,
Natrona Heights store and a member of a pioneer Pittsburgh family, died
unexpectedly last night.

Mr. Ewart, 6515 Forbes St., was the great-great grandson of Hugh Henry
Brackenridge, one of the original justices of the Pennsylvania Supreme
Court and a founder of the University of Pittsburgh.

The Ewart farm was a landmark on Center Avenue, in an area then known
as Minersville.

He had been with Horne's for 27 years.  He previously was with
S. Ewart Co., Union Supply Co. and Marshall Field Co.

He was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church; Sigma Alpha Epsilon;
University Club, and several civic organizations.

He is survived by his widow Mary; a son, Robert Brackenridge Ewart;
a sister, Mrs. Lyle Linderman, and a brother William.

Friends are being received at H. Sampson's. 537N. Neville St.,
where services will be at 8 p.m. Monday,  Burial will be Tuesday
morning in Allegheny cemetery.

Horne's Store Aid Will Be Buried Today
Samuel D. Ewart Was Firm's Manager In Natrona Heights

Funeral services for Samuel D. Ewart, 61, manager of the Joseph Horn
Company store in Natrona Heights, will be held at 8 p.m. today in
H. Sampson's, 537 North Neville Street.

Mr. Ewart died Saturday at his home, 6515 Forbes Avenue, Squirrel Hill,
shortly after he came home from work.

Ancestor Founded Academy

He was the great-great grandson of Justice High Henry Brackenridge,
founder of Pittsburgh Academy, which eventually became the university
of Pittsburgh.  Other forebears of Mr. Ewart helped organize the First
Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Ewart was born on the Ewart farm, Oakland, the son of William
McKibben (sic) Ewart and Alice Dicken Ewart.  He was educated at
Blair Academy and Dartmouth College.

Joined Horne's in 1932

Mr. Ewart began his career with S. Ewart Company, wholesale grocers, and
later worked for the union Supply company and the Marshall Field Company.
He joined Horne's in 1932.

He was a member of the Third Presbyterian Church, the University Club,
and the Rotary Club.

Surviving are his wife Mary Ege Ewart; a son Robert Brackenridge Ewart;
a sister, Mrs. Lyle Linderman, and a brother William F. Ewart.

Burial will be private tomorrow in Allegheny Cemetery.
