Hunterdon County Query

Surname: EMMONS
I am trying to find the birthplace of my ggfa, Elijah Emmons, DOB 1887. I have a document that says "poorhouse" for birthplace in N.J. Was there such a place? He had put on his marriage certificate that he was born in German Valley, N.J., but his parents (Hezekiah Emmons and Emma Brown) were married in Califon, N.J. in 1883. It seems Elijah was raised by a family in Ct. and now here we are 100 years later trying to piece together his siblings and N.J. family. Any information would be helpful.
