SCHWEITZER/BOWMAN
James Oliver SCHWEITZER, aka SHWITZER, SWEITZER, b 1826 Hannover Twp
d 1901 Easton PA, Civil War 15th NJ, Co.G, battle of Fredricksburg VA
is found in US Census 1850 NJ at a hotel in Milford, listed as a wagon
maker, age 24. In June 1850 he married 1st time at First Street Church
in Easton, PA to Ann Rockafeller BOWMAN of NJ, Pittsfield? His father
was listed in the Easton papers as John SWEITZER, but no mother's name
was included.
The newly wed couple settled on a farm near Milford NJ
where they had two daughters in 1852 and 1854. He was 6'5" and red hair
on his Civil War DD from Harper's Ferry, VA after Fredricksberg battle
where he reported being wounded twice before refusing to fight any more.
Family verbal history has Abraham Lincoln ordering a scheduled fireing
squad to release him and others.
By 1870 he was remarried to a widow in a second marriage at the same
Easton PA church. The farm, near Milford, NJ was sold at a Sheriff's
auction in 1872 by mortgage holder Leonard Neighbors BOEMAN/BOWMAN, his
first wife's father. He had one more child with the widow, my
grandfather, b 1871 Easton, PA. The widow had 4 children by her 1st
marriage.
I was interested in learning who were the parents of James Oliver
SCHWEITZER, and the ancestry of his 1st wife and her decendant
children.
