Introduction to the Digital Images

The Digital Images Pages contain copies of the Digital Images of the Microfilm from the Hunterdon Republican newspaper starting with 1901 and ending in 1953.
As noted on the Home Page, the microfilm was loaned to me by the Hunterdon County Library. This microfilm was made from unbound and frequently folded copies of the newspaper and as I found out, wherever the fold occurred, the text was usually obliterated. This may have included one or more lines of text. At first, I would request the correct information from the Hunterdon County Historical Society, but when I realized that 2 microfilm copies had been made, one from the folded newspapers and one from the newspapers bound in hard bindings, I decided to buy copies of the microfilm from the New Jersey State Archives in Trenton, New Jersey and correct the information on the digital images. Both sets of original newspapers are at the Historical Society's new storage facility at Flemington Junction. The Society also has the complete microfilm copy of the bound issues which can be accessed at their Library on Main St., Flemington. I intend to add corrections to the microfilm copies wherever these obliterations are found. In addition to the folds, the left column on page 3 of the newspaper, which contain items of Local Interest, was poorly copied. In many instances, the item was not reproducible due to the inadequate lighting. Many of these are partially or completely typed. Enjoy!
The items that you will view where obtained as noted above.
The Software used is MGI PhotoSuite, format is .jpg
The processing basically involves:
1. find item on digital image obtained from a microfilm reader.
2. increase or decrease brightness to enhance the text.
3. correct or add text to that which is obliterated.
4. copy the item.
5. paste item onto page devoted to one week of the newspaper.
6. label page with date and put in appropriate file by month and year.
All of the items can be accessed from the Table noted below. You will open each month to view the individual weeks. The page opens and will list the weeks. Click on them one at a time and scan for your names of interest. When finished scanning, click the "Go Back" arrow on top left of page to return to the previous page. DO NOT CLICK ON THE RED "X" at top right - this will close your browser!
To view the items, Click on "View" - "Zoom" - "Zoom In" Repeat until the image is large enough to read.

The Table below will allow you to open one month of digital images at a time. The entry of numbers for the Year and Month will indicate that the images are available for review. Click on the Year-Month number entry to open the microfilm copies for that selection. The color of the entry will change from blue to red after you visit the selection. This will enable you to know which ones you have already visited! I believe that if you shut down your computer instead of putting it in sleep mode or hibernation, the numbers will all revert to Blue, so keep a list and cross off those you visit! I am sure that you will know how to magnify the page after the initial opening, since no one has yet ask how to do this!
You may also copy an item of interest for your personal use. You must have a program that reads ".jpg" format images and you know how to use the select function for the program.
