The County of Camden is rich in history.

Although the City of Camden traces it's origins to 1764, with the purchase of the land the city is situated on by Jacob Cooper (great-grandson of one of the earliest settlers of the area, William Cooper), the County of Camden was officially created in 1844, when it separated from Gloucester County.

  • The City of Camden site includes an outstanding article on The History of Camden with great details on early West Jersey.
  • The County of Camden contains many of the nation's "firsts"; such as

The first drive-in theater (was located on Admiral Wilson Blvd).

The first African-American municipality incorporated norht of the Mason-Dixon Line; see Lawnside NJ.

Learn more at the history of Camden County and at the Camden Country Historical Society.

  • The County of Camden consists of 37 separate municipalities; click on the individual municipality links on the left to view their site, with many detailing their own history.
