Nicholl Family Histories

This section of the Web site holds the family histories of several contributors.   The histories are presented in several differing forms, - simple descendency trees, descendency reports, family fact files, or genealogical reports, for instance.   There are also direct links to other Web sites which provide comprehensive ancestral data.

You are invited to sample from the histories presented below.   We would be delighted to receive any contributions from other contributors.

James Nicholl of Ballymena James Nicholl is the great-great-great-grandfather of Edward McKillop Nicholl (<[email protected]>), designer of this Web site.   Due to the fragmented nature of Northern Irish genealogical records for the early part of the 19th Century, little is currently known about this James Nicholl - other than that he lived in Ballymena, County Antrim, and was father to the children shown on the Tree.

James Nicholl of Kilnock June (Nicholl) Gerbode is descended from a James Nicholl of Kilnock, County Antrim, who was born in 1845.   June provides a family Fact Sheet for James Nicholl, with his parents and descendants.

John Nicholl of Craignageeragh Sandra Tracy (<[email protected]>) is descended from a John Nicholl of Craignageeragh, who was born between 1844 and 1846.   She provides notes on John Nicholl's descendants that provide a basic descendency report.

Samuel Nichols & Mary Templeton Jerry Nichols has provided information on the descendants of Samuel Nichols and Mary Templeton.   His ancestors were natives of Co. Antrim and emigrated to America with their son Daniel.

William Nicholl of Ahoghill The LDS Ancestral Files contain a number of Nicholl names from Ahoghill with a common descendancy from a William Nicholl.   These have been input to Family Tree Maker v6.0 and then exported as a Genealogy Report (Descendant Tree).

Josiah Nicholl of Tennessee Margaret Nolen Nichol has provided a biographical sketch, and the Will, of a Josia Nicholl who originated from Donegal but settled in Tennessee in the early Nineteenth Century.

James Nickill, 1740 Bromfield Nicholl provides the descendency tree of James Nikill of the townland of Magherabeg, Fahan Parish, County Donegal, Ireland, ca. 1740.   James Nikill's wife's name has not survived but from contemporary Church of Ireland and surviving civil records he had at least three sons: John Nichol, James Nichol and William Nichol.

John Nicholl, 1734 Robert Starrs provides the descendency tree of John Nicholl, resident in Ballycastle, County Antrim, in 1734.

Robert Nichol, 1770 Victor Paul of 4 Ashcroft Place, Christchurch 8005, New Zealand has produced a detailed descendency report on his Nichol / Nickle ancestry from County Tyrone, starting with Robert Nichol (born pre 1770).

Victor Paul notes that "My mother was a NICHOL and I've found that they also used NICHOLL and NICKLE spelling in the 19thC.   The family story is that the family were originally McNICHOL (or McNICKLE).   That suggests Scottish plantation origins.
Mum was born on the family farm very close to Omagh in County Tyrone.   This was the townland of Crosh, parish of Cappagh.   They were Methodists and went to the Mayne chapel of the Omagh and Fintona circuit.   I would expect they were Church of Ireland or Presbyterian pre-Methodism.
As far as I've traced the family were always within a few miles of Omagh.   Some families they married into were CLEMENTS, GIVAN, McFARLAND."
