| This picturesque 19th century town is tucked away from the
hustle and bustle of the urban areas. Located mid-way between Concord and Hanover,
the quiet little village has not changed very much since its beginning almost
200 years ago. The population of Wilmot today is around 1000 people, and the area of
Wilmot is 29 square miles. Many of the Wilmot citizens of today
are related to original town founders. The records of the town are assembled in the Town Hall
for interested parties to examine. Before winding its way through the town, one of the three branches of the Black Water River originates at the spillway of the Tannery Pond dam, in the backyard of a Wilmot resident who lives on the site of the Wimot's first Tannery. Eventually the streams unite in Andover and flow on through Salisbury and Boscawen then fall into the Contoocook river near the N. angle of Hopkinton. On Village Road, the main street, is the Soldiers Memorial monument, dedicated in 1919, commemorates Wilmot citizens who served our country in wars from the American Revolution through World War II. |

Outwardly Wilmot has changed very little since its 19th century
beginning. There are still many historic houses and buildings still
standing. The Wilmot History Committee maintains a Historical Room at the Town
Hall for visitors to the town. Guests will find interesting individual memorabilia.

There are two well-written, thoroughly researched, publications written about Wilmot town history. The Early History of Wilmot New Hampshire by Casper L. Levarn. and, A Glimpse of the past by Florence Langley. Both are now out of print. However, anyone may browse through them at the Wilmot Library or the Town Hall. There may still be a few copies available for purchase at the Town Hall and through the Town Historian. These volumes provide a clear picture of life the way it used to be in those early days. |
