District Court Records: York County, Nebraska
Intention to Naturalize 1870 - 1929

Compiled from records at the Nebraska State Historical Society

Declaration of Intention or first papers may be taken out anytime after your arrival in the United States, providing you re 18 years old or over, but you must reside five years in the United States and you must be over 21 years of age before you can apply for your second papers. No person can be naturalized without taking out first papers, even though he came to this country before the age of 18 years. The declaration may be signed by a mark if the alien could not write his name. If the alien arrived in the US after June 19, 1906, he was required to have a certificate of arrival from the Department of Labor.

After November 1906, beginning with Volume 3, additional information was provided on the intent form. This information also appears in this index.

The original records of York County for the intent to naturalize are located at the Nebraska State Historical Society (NSHS). Most of the original records were hand written and a good many were very, very difficult to decipher. Every effort was made to insure the correct spelling of surnames.

The following abbreviations were used for foreign countries in "nationality", "place of birth", and "port of departure" fields.
