GHOST TOWNS OF PAWNEE COUNTY
Submitted by: Ruth Anna Hicks, Lincoln, NE
This is being printed from a book compiled by Nancy SOMMERHALDER, Lewiston with informational help from Mrs. Billy MILLER and Edwin BREDEMEIER. This is the first in a series of ten articles.
CINCINNATI From "Cincinnati" by Mabel ORD
The first settlers that came to Pawnee County came to the precinct of South Fork in the spring of 1854. The settlers were: Christian BOBST, Robert TURNER, Jacob ADAMS, and Robert ARCHER. The settlement was originally called the Bobst settlement. Later it was named Pleasant Valley, and finally named Cincinnati. The Pleasant Valley Post Office was located in the Bobst Cabin. First the cabin of Christian BOBST, then that of George BOBST until 1886.
George FRIES came in 1856 with funds to build a saw and grist mill the next spring. It was to be built at the south end of Cincinnati Lake. A settlement was taking shape and George FRIES saw the need for a mill. It was powered by a wood burning engine and existed there until FRIES built a larger and better mill on the Nemaha, as it ran through his land (NW 1/4 of section 35).
Dr. Andrew CROMWELL had a lake known as "CROMWELL Lake".
Across the road from the mill stood homes. The houses were sprawled along the road east to the school house. Cabins stood at various places in the timber. Besides the homes and mill, there were doctor's offices, a store or two, a drug store, a blacksmith shop, and a four story hotel. There were also some coal mines in the area. The Methodist's held their first class (of 8) in 1855 in Christian BOBST Cabin. Rev. David HART held the first service in 1855. The service was in the cabin of Henry SHELLHORN.
Situated as it was on the Nemaha, it was subject to flooding. In 1958 there was a flood that later all others were measured by. In 1883 a flood, almost as high, swept away the GRUBB family. Later a fire destroyed the hotel building, which also housed a store. The railroad was coming! Part of Cincinnati was platted (proposed to be built) hoping the railroad would make use of it. Instead higher ground was chosen, and the Cincinnati era ended. The cemetery still remains on a knoll east of the river. [continued]
