Ghost Towns (continued)

DODGE COUNTY

CROWELL--This "almost ghost town" was a small station point on the line of the F.E. & M.V. Railway in Pebble civil township. It was platted in December 1883 by the Elkhorn Land Company on Sections 11 and 2, Township 20, Range 6, East. A post office was established in the area in 1873. At one time in Crowell there was a general store, grain warehouse, a hotel, livery barn, hardware store, blacksmith shop, lumber company, etc.

LOGAN--Logan was a small village situated on the east bank of the Elkhorn River near the mouth of Logan Creek and two miles northeast of Hooper. By 1880 it had a good flouring mill, store, and an excellent schoolhouse. The post office was established in January 1869 and discontinued in November 1878.

PEBBLE--Pebble was surveyed in 1870 by F W WIRMINGHAUS, the county surveyor. As the village was not located on the line the Elkhorn Valley road, the new settlement of Scribner soon outstripped it. By 1882 it consisted of a few families, a post office, a schoolhouse, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a grist mill. The area post office was established in January 1868 and discontinued in October 1882. With no railroad connection, Pebble's growth was stifled. The town was named for white pebbles found in a nearby creek by soldiers in 1849 during the Pawnee War. Its promoters tried to induce the railroad company to Pebble, but Scribner was finally selected. The Pebble Roller Mill was established near here in 1869 and was a thriving concern for many years.

WEBSTER--This was a once thriving village in the middle-western part of the county which in 1880 had two churches, good general stores, and a fine school building.
