SHERMAN COUNTY, NEBRASKA

"A History of Loup City, Nebraska" from SHERMAN DAM DEDICATION, June 1963

Loup City was the first permanent settlement in the county, which was named for the CW general, William Tecumseh SHERMAN.
In 1871 Cyrus, Martin & William BENSCHOTER & William WALT visited the area.
In the spring of 1873 a group of men & their families gathered in Grand Island and organized Sherman Co., choosing the BENSCHOTER site as the county seat. That same year a school, courthouse & hotel were built.
There were 2 newspapers, but the present SHERMAN COUNTY TIMES is now (1963) in its 86th year of publication.

"A History of the Village of Ashton, NE" (Sherman County).

The Lincoln Townsite Co. platted the original town Nov. 9, 1887.
J.P. TAYLOR is said to have named the town in honor of his old home in Ashton, Ill.
Dist. 16 & the rural post office Zeven (originally called Wilhelmshohe) were not moved to the new townsite until after 1888. It was then called Ashton, same name as the town abandoning the name of Zeven.

Town was incorporated after 53 signers had presented a petition on 30 March 1889. Trustees:

Theo. OJENDYK	H. SMELSER	J. ARTHAUD	Fred WICHMAN	Yost BLUMER

First settlers came about 1875 or before. Most were of German descent and later settlers were of Polish & Swedish descent.
Churches & schools were built early.
The ASHTON NEWS, later called the ASHTON HERALD, no longer exist.

VALLEY COUNTY

"A History of Arcadia"

The first settler was George McKELLAR, who started farming near the present town.
Other early settlers: W.H. FRADENBURG & his bro., Alanzo & family. Early settlers who are still (1963) living are Mrs. Isabella WALL & Walter SORENSON.
First post office was built in 1874.
A school was built soon after early settlement in the area.
