ROOTING AROUND WITH COMPUTERS "Keith's Computer Korner" in the Winter issue of NEBRASKA ANCESTREE held my interest from beginning to end because I, too, am delighted with the ability of the computer to manipulate data. But I would like to counter his mention of a software program by suggesting another - ROOTS II. To me it's the best!
BACKGROUND: I was an absolute computer illiterate" when I first stuck a tentative toe in the computer ocean. The confusion of terms and hardware and jargon would have boggled the mind of an Einstein and I backed off in exhausted discouragement. Then I took a brief course in wordprocessing from the local community college and by the time it was finished I had lost my fear of much of the jargon. After a fairly short time I could mouth a lot of the terms with some degree of confidence, and believe me, it's a big help in bridging the communication gap with sales personnel.
Armed with my rudimentary knowledge I began to persure the marked and discovered that many word-processing programs took 6 months to a year before the user felt confident in their use. Then I found the Epson QX-10 with its "user-friendly" software and I was hooked. In a few days I felt comfortable with it. Oh, I hear it's not as fast as other software, but I'm retired and in no hurry, so I enjoy it thoroughly. There are a few codes to memorize, when you want to store a file you push a button marked "STORE"; to retrieve a file you push a button marked "RETRIEVE"; when you want to print a file you push a button marked "PRINT". It's wonderful to operate in English.
ROOTS PROGRAMS: I decided to try computerizing my roots research about the time of the annual conference of The National Genealogical Society in San Francisco. It offered an opportunity to compare available genealogical software including the LDS program Keith mentioned. ROOTS II won me, hands down, and I urge anyone interested in computer genealogy to explore its possibilities.
FEATURES: To begin with, ROOTS II has been configured for the IBM, the Apple, and possibly the Morrow. (It required something special for my Epson but that's another story.) It doesn't need the manipulation of six disks like the LDS program. Its manual is easy to follow compared to other computer manuals I've tried to read, and there are instructions and helps on the screen that make it possible for a novice to find his or her way through the maze of actions with a minimum of frustration. Up to 4095 individuals can be entered per file and up to 31 children per marriage. That's a lot of genealogy in one file. And for icing, if you want to invest in a color adapter, you can add maps and photographs to your charts and biographical material!
FINAL WORD: Lest anyone misconstrue my enthusiasm, I wish to state that I am in no way connected with the makers of ROOTS II. To their everlasting credit, however, they have been consistently helpful, prompt and courteous in response to my questions, and have gone out of their way to help me as much as possible. So if anyone out there is interested in learning about a very find genealogical program, write to Dr. Howard Nurse, President of CommSoft, 2452 Embarcadero Way, Palo Alto, CA 94303; or telephone (415) 493-2184. It's worth the effort.
COMMENTS ANYONE??
Let us know about the genealogical program you are using on your computer. What you like and don't like. We would like to publish articles on computers and genealogy.
