SOUTH FORK, A Day's Ramble Among the Old Settlers, Pawnee Co. A glorious May day, a swift-going pony and excellent roads, were the circumstances under which the Enterprise reporter started on his visit to one of the oldest settlements in Pawnee county. A ten mile ride over as good land as through as beautiful scenery as one could ask, brings us to Mr. John LORE's fine farm on the banks of Jake's Run. Settling here in 1854, Mr. LORE, after years of hard work, sees the fruits of his labors in a comfortable home and well-improved farm. He is now turning his attention to those smaller industries which make farm life enjoyable, finding pleasant employment in his orchard and garden, and among his bees. Of his orchard we shall speak at another time. His crops, as were those of every man we visited, are in fine condition. Many years a teacher -- always a thinker, Mr. LORE's views are those of a scholar, and we hope to have frequent communications from him for our columns. After partaking of Mrs. LORE's handiwork in the shape of a good dinner, we ride on to Cincinnati, the only postoffice in the

South Fork, Pawnee Co., continued:precinct. Here we find E. W. COHN, well known through the county, is busy repairing the store room in the old Cincinnati House, preparatory to opening out a stock of goods. After several years sojourn in Lincoln, he returns to his old love, contented to spend the rest of his days on the banks of the Nemaha. He still keeps his favorite gray roadster, Cornet, the winner of three state fair premiums. M.L. HARRINGTON, the postmaster, speaks a good word of the ENTERPRISE. Visiting James O'LAUGHLIN's farm, we find him to be another '54 settler, with as well an improved place as can be found in the county. An orchard of 400 trees, grapes and small fruits in abundance, and a well-stocked farm, affords a possession of which an man might be proud. We were here shown a row of walnut trees, which had sprung from the nuts dropped in the ground fifteen years ago, and now the trees are ten inches in diameter. These old settlers with all the country open to them chose to locate in the valley at the foot of the bluffs. Consequently, they have a diversity of land and resources. The best of soil, good timber and plenty of stone, all found frequently on the same farm. Making our way over a somewhat rough road, to the house of Geo. T. BOBST, we find him at work in the best field of corn we had yet seen. Mr. B's house is built on the site of the first house in Pawnee county, which his father built in 1854. With stories of "ye olden time" in Nebraska at his tongue's end, and genial withal, we could only wish that a day instead of an hour was the allotted time with Mr. B., but the setting sun hurried us away. Stopping on our way home at PRIES' mill, we find an industry located in the right place, with the right man at the head of it. Excellent water power, a good miller and a great flow of custom, places Mr. FRIES in a prosperous condition. Of the farmers of this precinct, the PRIES Bros., LORE Bros. BOBST, O'LOUGHLIN and TURNER, are the best established, because the oldest settlers.
To SUM it all up, we find South Fork to be well settled and well-improved. Greater efforts have been made at farming this season, with better prospects of success than ever before. The people are prosperous, and in good spirits, and all together it is well with the South Forkers.
