FROM THE LINEAGE AND SURNAME CHAIRMAN
FLORENCE (SNYDER) SCHNITT
...

I have been reciving (sic) several Four Generation Ancestor Charts and 3 x 5 Surname Cars prepared correctly, as explained in the membership brochure. These are a pleasure to receive as they are promptly placed on file with very little to do on my part, except to answer your letters if a SASE is enclosed.

However, I still receive cards that are too large for our files. If you are one who has sent these, please redo them if you want them in our records. I simply do not have time to redo these cards, so they are placed on the back burner. You can purchase 100 3 x 5 recipe cards at any drug store or variety store for about 59c. We do not furnish these cards to members.

If I receive ancestor charts without the surname cards, these are put in a separate notebook until I can find the time to make up the surname cards that members should be doing. I like to spdnd (sic) my time answering your letters.

It is the card file I search through when I check to see who is searching for the name you request. Doesn't it stand to reason your surname cards are very important. One day in the future, when we have a sufficient amount of Ancestor Charts, we plan to do some publishing. If yours aren't there they won't be published.

The Four Generation Ancestor Charts we are sending out to NEW members only (at the time you jointed) are No. A24 and can be ordered from Everton Publishers, P.O. Box 368, Logan, Utah 84321. The price is $4.10 for 100 and $10.80 for 500 charts. If you have misplaced your tow (sic) ancestor charts, that were sent you when you joined NSGS, please contact the membership chairman, NOT ME, as I do not have a supply of charts to sent out. His name and address is Mr. Ray Billesbach,.... Please include a SASE. The charts are probably acout (sic) 4ç each.

We are not set up to handle family sheets at this time, so please keep these in your files. All we are asking you to send me are the Four Generation Ancestor Charts and the 3 x 5 Surname Cards.

Please send your queries to ..., not to me.

LIBRARIANS AND ARCHIVISTS

MEET IN SAN FRANCISCO TO DISCUSS ISSUES AND ANSWERS IN PROVIDING
BETTER REFERENCE SERVICES TO GENEALOGISTS

A Preconference on GENEALOGY AND LOCAL HISTORY REFERENCE SERVICES sponsored by the History Section of the Reference and Adult Services Division of the American Library Association was held at the University of San Francisco from June 24 to June 26, 1981. Representing many of our finest national genealogy and local history collections, twenty-five librarians and archivists presented a variety of sessions for reference librarians who wanted to understand the special research problems of the genealogist in order to provide this type of patron with better reference service.

In the final session of the Preconference a panel of seven members including James B. Bell of the New England Historic Genealogical Society; Gary P. Jensen of the Library of Congress; Dorothy M. Lower of the Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, Indiana; Carolyn Lepold Michaels of the DAR Library; Gunther E. Pohl of the New York Public Libary (sic), David Mayfield of the Genealogical Society of Utah Library and Robert N. Warner, Archivist of the United States discussed important issues in serving the patron interested and genealogy and local history research. It is left that with the increased demand for genealogical information and more bugetary limitation in the institutions which have large holdings of genealogy and local history reference materials, it has become more important than ever before for local libraries to collect and maintain core collections of genealogical guides and local community history. If reference librarians throughout the country can help the beginning genealogist with their questions, then libraries and archives with the large specialized collections can concentrate their services on the utilization of their unique source materials.

It was also agreed that lack of monetary support for public institutions who are responsible for preserving unique records is not only straining their ability to provide adequate public service, but is endangering their efforts to preserve valuable records which may ultimately lost forever. Only if the public becomes aware of these severe budetary (sic) limitations and emands (sic) increased bugetary (sic) support, can this problem be alleviated.

NEWCOMERS to Florence during 1854 were: Philip CHAPMAN, J. B. STOTTSMAN, B.R. PEGRAN, J.M. PARKER, J. C. MITCHELL and others who were interested in laying out the village and in organizing the Florence Land Company. The village was resurveyed and platted by L. F. WAGNER. A great many of the buildings were constructed by Samuel FORGEY and Mr. DRIVER

The NEBRASKIAN was the first paper set up and printed in Omaha with its own type and press. It was established in the fall of 1854 with Bird B. CHAPMAN as owner, John SHERMAN as editor and Joe STRICKLAND as printer.
