"A History of Comstock, Nebraska"
from SHERMAN DAM DEDICATION, June 7, 8, & 9, 1963. (Custer County)Comstock is the youngest town in Custer Co. Town was located and first surveyed in 1899.
Comstock originated from a town known as Douglas Grove, when a post office was opened Jan 89 1875, 1 mi. west & 1 mi. south of the present town. On March 21, 1888 the name was changed to Wescott, named for W. S. WESCOTT,
In 1899 W. H. COMSTOCK moved a store bldg, from Wescott across the river to the present site because the railroad was coming through. Thus the town was named for him,
In 1900 a school house was built. Comstock's first newspaper, THE INDEX, was started in Oct, 1900 with H. O. COALEY as editor. It had several owners until 1926 when Edward KRIKAC bought and renamed it THE COMSTOCK NEWS. He is still (1963) editor & publisher.
