Two sources for obtaining post office information are the "Official Register of the United States, containing a list of officers and employees in the civil, military, and naval service on the first of July 1883". Published every other year beginning in about 1817 by the Federal Government, the listings include post offices, postmasters and their salaries. A second source is "Appointments of U.S. Postmasters, 1832-1971" from the National Archives.
Three dates should be noted:
Historically, many pioneers heading west trailed through Seward County on their way to the Platte River and points west. The continental railroad was completed in the late 1860s.
In the early days of the postal service, salaries of the postmasters in smaller offices varied with the amount of mail handled. After the free delivery of mail became universal, salaries became more uniform and a number of smaller rural post offices closed.
The following tables include Seward County post offices beginning in 1857 as gleaned from the "Official Register of the United States" between 1869 and 1907. Not all editions are represented, but many can be found at the Internet Archives using the search term "Official Register of the United States" and "Appointments of U.S. Postmasters, 1832-1971". Original documents are located in the National Archives. They have been digitized and indexed with the cooperation of Ancestry.com.
