As has happened in other cemeteries, the first dated burials seem to precede the establishment of the cemetery (for example Ivanhoe Lovell died 20 Mar 1871 and his brother Charles died 25 Feb 1882.) However, these remains (probably from a family cemetery) were reinterred in the Springfield Cemetery after it was founded. It is a public cemetery and is operated by the Springfiled Cemetery Association. It is currently in use and is well maintained.
The cemetery was established just after the town of Springfield itself was founded. The deed, dated 7 Sep 1882, was recorded in Book "O", Page 327. Henry T. Clarke and others deeded the five acres of land to the Springfield Cemetery Association for $400.00.
An addition to the cemetery was made through a deed dated 21 Dec 1912 and recorded on 11 Mar 1913 in Book 45, Page 220. The land was deeded by Henry c. Glesmann and wife to the Springfield Cemetery Association and contained about 2 1/3 acres which was just north of the original cemetery. The consideration was $400.00, the same amount paid for the original five acres.
The plat was filed 11 Jul 1900 in Book 33, Page 32.
The original records were destroyed by the 19 Mar 1903 fire which destroyed the south half of Springfield's business district, so records of the earlier burials are not complete.
