JOSEPH E. "SPUD" SHAFER

Joseph E. "Spud" SHAFER, 70, of Gibbon died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at Beaver Lake, NE. Mr. Shafer was born on Aug. 18, 1932, at Bridgeport to William Homer and Bertha (Mattheyer) Shafer. Survivors of the immediate family include two sons and a daughter-in-law; two daughters and sons-in-law; two sisters; and a brother. Survivors also include 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Shafer grew up in Shelton. He graduated from Shelton High School in 1950 and joined the U.S. Navy, in which he served for four years. He married Jo Anne Hindmarsh in February 1953, at San Diego. They had five children. He later married Arlyn Davlin, at Ericson. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks Club, Eagles Club and American Legion. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, woodworking, playing cards and being with family. He was preceded in death by one infant son, Donald Douglas; his parents; four sisters; five brothers; and his wife, Arlyn, in July 1991.

EDNA MABEL SHERLOCK

In Loving Memory, Edna Mabel Sherlock 01/05/1925 - 12/17/2005. Edna Mabel Sherlock, 80, of Gering, died Saturday, December 17, 2005, at Regional West Medical Center, Scottsbluff. A memorial service will be 10:00 A.M., Thursday, December 22, 2005, at the Assembly of God Church, Minatare with Pastor Benjamin Hardt officiating. Cremation was at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory, Scottsbluff. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Angora Cemetery. Edna was born January 5, 1925, at Broadwater, Nebraska to Spencer and Lillie Mae (Brown) Stites. She graduated from high school in Broadwater. She attended college at Chadron and Lincoln where she received her teaching degree. She taught rural school in the sandhills, at Angora, in Sioux County, at the little pink schoolhouse, at Valentine and at Alliance. On July 19, 1944, she married Clarence Sherlock in Gering. She was also a distributor of Tupperware, Watkins and Conklin products. She attended the Minatare Assembly of God Church and was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Harrison, Gering and Scottsbluff. Edna enjoyed gardening, needlepoint, crochet and crafts. Survivors include her children, Lillie (Del) Clary of Englewood, Colorado, Ellis Sherlock of Brush, Colorado, Ella (Stanley) Thomas of Ottumwa, Iowa, Leyn (Marcia) Sherlock of Gering, Trina (Roger) Kaufman of Gering; Ida (Jim) Penny of Aurora, Colorado and Chris (Wayne) McGrew of Mitchell; grandchildren, Penny (Mike) Geotz of Aurora, Colorado, Linda (Troy) Lupfer of Mitchell, Paula (Tony) Butler of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Robin (Alex) Goldbach of Germany, Shawna Thomas of Ottumwa, Iowa, JR (Sandra) Muske of Hastings, Connie Nicely of Kimball, Corey (Sheila) Kaufman of Gering, Mike Kaufman of Gering, Crystal (Bret) Kidd of Gering, Brett Penny of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Dylan McGrew of Mitchell and Stacy McGrew of Mitchell; 21 great-grandchildren; and sister, Hazel Kleich of Bridgeport. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, John; sister, Dorenne; and two infant children. Memorials in care of the family.

BETTY JEAN BRIGGS SMITH

Betty Jean BRIGGS SMITH, 83, of Mesa, Arizona, died Sunday, March 8, 2009. She was born in Lakeview, North Dakota on July 2, 1925 and was one of nine children born to Leon and Kathryn (Ball) Briggs. At 16, Betty moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where she became a waitress, a work she would continue for most of her life. Betty married Gordon Randall Smith in 1948. In 1952, they settled in Casper, Wyoming where she worked many years at the Holiday Inn. She moved to Arizona in 2003, to be closer to family. She was preceded in death by her husband Gordon and is survived by two stepsons, Monte Gene Smith of Gilbert, Arizona and Randy Harris Smith of Centerville, Utah, 7 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Betty enjoyed shopping for clothes, loved diamonds, and anything pink. She was a talented flower gardener and received many compliments on her roses. She loved country music and later in life said her hobbies were working, walking, and watching TV. Many with whom she associated appreciated her cheery smile and friendly disposition. Betty was buried next to her husband Gordon in the Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery in Bridgeport, Nebraska.

CHARLES A. SMITH

Charles A. SMITH, 72, of Bayard died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2003 at the Dalton Cemetery with Pastor Wilson officiating and Military Honors by The United States Army, 15 Field Artillery, Fort Riley, Kan. Friends may call at the Bridgeport Memorial Chapel from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 2. A memorial has been established to the American Legion Post # 301 Mintken and Davison in Dalton. Charles was born April 30, 1930 in Ottawa, Ill. to Everett Edward and Edith Ione (Maltas) Smith. He attended school in Waterloo, Iowa and he enlisted in the United States Army on Feb. 2, 1950 and served until he was honorably discharged on Aug. 3, 1951. He enlisted for a second tour on Dec. 28, 1953 and served his country until he retired July 31, 1973. After serving his country he owned and operated several bars and grills in Tacoma, Wash. and Bayard until ill heath forced him to retire. While Charles was ill he resided with his good friends Trish and Kevin Hendricks until his death. He was a generous person with a big heart and was always willing to help anyone in need. He was a member of the Chuck Wagon Church and a past member of the Elks, VFW and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.

GEORGE C. STERKEL

George C. STERKEL, 74, of Scottsbluff, died Sun., June 1, 2003, at his home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Harris officiating. Interment will be in the Bayard Cemetery. A memorial has been established in care of the family. Friends may call at the funeral home between 1� 8 p.m. Tuesday. George was born Aug. 8, 1928, in Bayard to Conrad and Emma (Rohrbouck) Sterkel. George grew up and attended school in Bayard. He entered the Air Force May 17, 1948, and was honorably discharged Aug. 22, 1949. He returned to Bayard where he helped his father farm. He moved to Phoenix and later Denver where he did construction work. He came to Scottsbluff where he was a body and fender man for Ace Body Shop and also worked for Chester Cooper. He has been disabled since 1985. He married Elsie Fisher May 11, 1979, in Big Springs. She preceded him in death in 1989. He is survived by his two sisters; brother; a Son; a daughter; and five grandchildren. His parents, wife and two brothers, Charles and Leonard preceded him in death.

CARL SCHWINDT

Carl SCHWINDT, 92 of Gering, Neb. died Sun., March 2, 2003 at Heritage Health Care Center. Funeral services will be Thurs., March 6, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. at Zion Evangelical Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Jones officiating. Interment will be at Bayard Cemetery in Bayard, Neb. Memorials have been established to Prairie Haven Hospice and Heritage Health Care Center. Visitation will be Wed. from 9:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Gering Memorial Chapel. Carl was born on March 6, 1910 at Potopwa, Russia to Henry and Caroline (Reifschneider) Schwindt. Carl and four other children left Potopwa, Russia on the King Kiser Wilhelm Ship when he was three years old and settled in the Gering area. Carl and his wife, Henrietta (Fogel) Schwindt, who preceded him, moved to Bayard where they farmed and later moved to Kimball where Carl owned the Standard Station. Carl was later the Kimball Chamber Executive Director. Carl later married Esther and moved to Gering to make their home. Carl joined the Lions Club in 1943 and was a lifetime member, and was also a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church. He served many offices in the Lions Club. Carl's enjoyment in life was his family. He was a Christian and very solid and steadfast in his beliefs and actions throughout his life. He was proud to be an American citizen. Carl is survived by his wife; son and his wife; daughter and her husband; a daughter-in-law; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren; brother and his wife; a stepson and his wife, step-daughter, and five step-grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Henrietta Fogel Schwindt, son Jimmy Schwindt, daughter-in-law Charolette Nuss Schwindt, granddaughter Nikki Schwindt, brothers Henry Schwindt, and Fred Schwindt, sisters Katy Yekel, Suzanne Constance, Leah Bumpus, Emma Cheattle, Caroline Schwindt, Molly Osgood and Amy Libsack.
