RAY EVANS

Ray EVANS, 95, Bayard, Neb. died Tuesday morning, August 13, 2002 at Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard. His funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 16 at Community Bible Church in Bayard with Pastor Tom Peyton officiating. Burial will be in the Bayard Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today and one hour prior to service time Friday morning at Community Bible Church. Memorials may be given to Chimney Rock Villa in Ray's memory. The Jolliffe Funeral Home of Bridgeport is in charge of the arrangements. Alfred Raymond Evans was born August 8, 1907 in Bonesteel, S.D., the son of Raymond Andrew and Stella (Romig) Evans. He attended school in Bonesteel. He moved to eastern Nebraska where he met and married Florence Helen Marie Alfred on November 3, 1926 at Columbus. The couple moved to Maxwell where he worked for the local newspaper. They moved to Sidney where Ray worked for the Sidney Telegraph for seventeen years. The couple was in the printing business all their married lives, until retiring. They owned the Lodgepole Express, Pioneer Press in Sidney, the Big Springs Enterprise, and the Perkins County News to name a few. When Ray and Florence were not in the paper business, they owned commercial printing companies in Callaway and Sidney. They moved to Bayard in 1996 and Ray became a resident of Chimney Rock Villa in 1999 where he participated in most of the activities, especially the old time gospel singing. He also enjoyed playing cards with his wife, sons, and other residents. Ray and Florence celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary last November with family and friends at Chimney Rock Villa. Ray enjoyed throwing horseshoes. One year, he took second place in the Class B State Horseshoe Tournament. He was a member of the Nebraska Press Association and received the Golden Pica Pole Award for being in the printing business for 65 years. Most recently, Ray attended Community Bible Church in Bayard. Ray is survived by his wife; children three sons; two daughters; a sister-in-law; 53 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. His parents, son Virgil Lee Evans, son-in-law Edwin Bennett, daughter-in-law LaVonne Evans, and all of his brothers and sisters preceded him in death.
