Edwards, A. W. --- Fargo-The death of Major A. W.  Edwards here, Feb. 8, came as a great shock to relatives and friends, not-withstanding it had been known for some time that his Condition was hopeless. While his illness dated from his resignation and United States consul at Montreal in July, 1906, he had been confined to his home only the past few months. Major Edwards was a typical North Dakotan. Loyalty to friends, a rugged honesty and dogged determination to do his whole duty in manifold public duties he was called upon to perform characterized his career in this state.  Courage and hopefulness in the stress of adversity were other characteristics. He was a hard fighter in politics and a forceful, original writer.  Major Edwards was born in Ohio, Aug. 27, 1840. His father removed to Macoupin county, III., in 1848, where young Edwards attended the country schools and was later a student at McKenzie college. In 1878 he came to Fargo as editor of The Republican, and established The Daily Argus in 1879. He was elected mayor of Fargo in 1886-87, and Was a member of the legislature in 1895-96. He lost The Argus in 1891 and with H. C. Plumley started The Forum, Nov. 17, 1891. He then purchased The Republican, the first paper he started, and consolidated the two.  On March 17, 1903, he was appointed consul-general to Montreal, and held that position till compelled by ill health to resign in 1906.
